10. Sony’s Big Apology
Okay so it may not be a console nor is it a game but the Sony conference will be interesting especially considering the horrible mess that has happened on the Playstation Network recently. With continuing threats from hackers and maintenance dates being delayed and moved it’s hard not to sympathise with the company. Even before E3 has started they have an uphill battle and what exactly they say and do to make it up to Playstation 3 owners during their conference will be reason enough to watch their presentation come Monday.
9. Hardcore Kinect Titles
Let’s face it, ever since the Kinect came out last year the selection of truly good games out there has been… well it’s been downright awful. If rumours are anything to go by though it looks like Microsoft are going to show off a good number of hardcore titles exclusively for the Kinect at their conference. We already know about Child of Eden and Shadows of the Damned which looks like a great start but hopefully we’ll see plenty more like the much hinted at Gears of War Kinect title or even an outright new and unexpected IP. What’s for certain is that Microsoft need a big win after last years casually aimed conference and hardcore Kinect games is a great way to open up.
8. Nintendo eShop
The Nintendo 3DS could really benefit from a vast online shopping service. 3D trailers for movies and upcoming games, old favourites returning in full 3D glory plus loads more. While the wait has been long, June 8th should be more than worth it as we finally get our hands on the eShop. Promised are a selection of old Gameboy and Gameboy Colour games as well as some demos and best of all a free copy of Excitebike in 3D. I expect this to be discussed during the conference as it releases while it is happening.
7. Nintendo 3DS Line-Up
What started off as a fantastic looking device with tons of promising 3D titles later became a pretty underwhelming launch with few standout games to go on. However a year has gone by and surely this is plenty of time for Nintendo and other third parties to surprise us with their new ideas. Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, Starfox and Metal Gear Solid are just a handful of already known titles due out this year that will be shown off in all their glory, so what can we expect in terms of brand new surprises? Well as we know by now that’s half the fun of E3. Trying to guess. F-Zero, Harmonix’s new title… who knows…
6. The Wii Line-Up
I’ve heard so many people out there claiming that the Wii is now dead and buried. With little to no decent games ever being released any more Nintendo now more than ever need to prove to it’s fans that it’s still got some more tricks up its sleeve. We already know that Xenoblade Chronicles has made it out of Japan and rumours point toward The Last Story following suit too. All well and good… if you’re a fan of RPGs. So what’s left for those of us who like a bit of variety? Well of course there’s Zelda Skyward Swords and a new Kirby too but what else? As of now nothing much but as we know from watching last year’s E3, Nintendo are capable of revealing a ton of new unknown titles at the last minute. Goldeneye, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Mario Sports Mix and a whole lot more made their debut so perhaps it’s best not to count the big N out just yet. The Wii likely has plenty more to come.
5. Sonic Generations
Sonic definitely had a great year in 2010 offering not one, not two but three really enjoyable games. He went back to his roots in Sonic 4, gave Mario a run for his money in Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing and showed that the blue blur CAN indeed do 3D right in the excellent Sonic Colours on the Wii. Now it appears SEGA are hoping to take this momentum and create the ultimate game for the fans in Sonic Generations.
Taking all the older Sonic titles and remaking their stages in both a classic style and more modern version is genius. Not only does it cater for those who enjoyed Sonic Colours and the daytime stages of Unleashed but it also shuts up those who constantly complain about SEGA taking him back to basics. So far we know of Green Hill Zone making a return but with so many other amazing stages to pick from I cannot wait till we see some more remade in full 3D at E3.
4. Super Mario 3DS
I figured this deserved it’s own slot as based on the previous Super Mario Galaxies what we have here is likely going to be something truly spectacular. Said to be combining Super Mario 64 with Super Mario Bros 3 and using the 3D effect to make platforming much easier we couldn’t really be asking for much more. Well except the promise of the return of the raccoon suit and perhaps some more classic power ups ☺
3. Super Smash Bros 4
One rumour that has caught my eye over the last couple of days is that of a new Smash Bros game subtitled “Strife.” Yeah, I’m not too crazy about that name either. But rubbish title or not it’s hard to deny the popularity this series has with all three iterations being real system sellers in the past. While this rumour is likely to be fanboy wishing, you can’t help but think there may be an element of truth to it. Each console upon being announced has had a Smash Bros as one of the headlining titles so why not have the same happen here? It sells extremely well and it seems like the right time for a new version to at least be shown in video form.
What do we want from this then? How about newer characters, more third party appearances, a huge online system with a ton of interactive features and transferable options. More music, more stages…. And… just… welll… more!
Whether it’s announced at this E3 or not I think we can safely say we haven’t seen the last of this epic fighter.
2. Pikmin 3
Every year I get my hopes up and every year I walk away disappointed. Where is my Pikmin 3?!? We know it’s coming and even Miyamoto told us it was coming along well. Originally confirmed to still be in development for the Wii the long wait has me thinking that maybe this could have pulled a Twilight Princess and moved onto the new system… Maybe…
1. Project Café
Of course number one was going to be Nintendo’s new console. The rumours all point toward a system with more horsepower than both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, that also focuses on online connectivity, uses controls with six inch touch screens that allow you to actually feel objects and can even make you an excellent cup of coffee! Okay maybe I made that last one up, but even so with all these ideas springing up you can’t help but think that some of them seem very plausible.
While things are being kept very hush hush at Nintendo what we do know is that whatever they announce will be playable and released in 2012. Will Nintendo win back their hardcore fans, will they stick with their new casual crowd? Will it indeed make a cup of coffee!?! Who knows. This is going to be a very… long… wait…
Well there you have it. I’m sure many of you will have other announcements you can’t wait to hear so post yours :)
