I was playing the MGS2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders the other day. (I actually had to search high and low for a copy of ZOE that still had the demo packaged with it).

And thinking about what it would be like to be immersed in the real full-scale game again.

The demo is still in Japanese but with English subtitles yet, I'm 'there', I'm 'Snake', and I can understand everything that is going on around me. I know that somewhere along the line the voice of Cam Clarke (Liquid Snake) is in the credits of the UK version. Why? Thought I'd killed him when the FoxDie kicked in at the end of Metal Gear Solid when I played it last time?

So it's intruiging. I've avoided looking at spoilers so far and don't intend to read any before 22nd February either. OPSM2 ran a review this issue with a 'Spoiler Alert' on the first page, so I hastily flicked over to the next page. I've seen umpteen MGS2 threads on the forums and avoided most of them.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is released on 22nd February. That's 2/2/2002. A date that's very hard to forget with all those twos in it.

Snake has new moves, like a running dive and roll to knock over a guard whilst been chased, or creeping up behind a guard, switching to first person mode, aiming at him and holding him up. If you point the laser sight at his head he shimmies and drops an item. If you point the laser sight at his groin he does the same. Snake can now jump over a railing and hang down.

The enemy AI is more advanced, with guards performing 'clearances' where Snake MUST hide to avoid detection as the guards signal to each other and perform searches of the area in which Snake is thought to be.

Snake can hide in lockers, he can pick up guards, shake them down for items and put their bodies in lockers to hide them.

Everytime I play the MGS2 demo I think on these things and look forward to the full version which is released in 71 days. That's about 1704 hours or 102240 minutes, roughly.

Ejrm oy fprd goms;;u hry tr;rsdrf.....oops, sorry, my bandana just slipped down over my eyes there, it's hard to type when you can't see.

When it does finally get released, I will be there waiting. My gaming calendar has a big red circle around that date. I'm pointing the red laser beam of my SOCOM at it right now. Waiting. Watching.

Meantime there's lots of games for me to play to be getting on with. There's HeadHunter on the Dreamcast to be completed, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance coming out tomorrow, Burnout for those intense arcade moments, cars to collect in Gran Turismo 3, and I've still got to collect all the hidden packages in Grand Theft Auto 3. That should keep me going for a while. Of course there's Christmas too, where I take a traditional 'gaming break' to sneak stealthily downstairs and say 'Hi' to my family (placing my back to the wall and leaning around the door to check that all is clear first of course...)

After doing the turkey and presents 'thang' I'll then sneak back upstairs (avoiding the lasers) and back into the safe haven of my room. To wait. I worked out that on 25th December there will only be 59 days to go. That's only 1416 hours.

I worked out that in 1416 hours I can run to Clifton Suspension Bridge and bungee off it onto a passing oil tanker 177 times. I might try it once the turkey has settled.

Anyway, I'm determined not to let MGS2 rule my life, so I'm avoiding thinking about it. Now I have to go because my kitten is trying to play with the sheathed knife on my right leg and it's a bit distracting. Damn...

That's no good to me. Three months from today would be March 14th, so unless they allow me to bring my PS2 with me and pass me MGS2 through a hatch and let me play it for the last 22 days of the experiment it's no deal.

The European Space Agency is looking for people to take part in a 3 month programme. You receive 7 grand for staying in a bed for 3 months whilst they analyze how the body and mind reponds to a long period of inaction and limited mental stimulation. Perhaps you could do that to take your mind of MGS2. Then again, it would probably just make things a 100 times worse. Sorry. Bad idea.
