Anyone been looking at the new .NET stuff from M$?

Just getting involved with some evaluation work, J2EE v .NET and wondered what your views were.

I'm actually quite impressed.

All true, but there are ways of getting ASP to work on Unix-based machines, it will only be a matter of time before the same thing happens to .NET

Oh, and the X(pensive)-box...

Cool, I've not written ASP for a while so I was thinking about making the jump to .NET

This is good for us as we are totally Windows based, so for us as a company, we can't wait to adopt it!! Especially as 90% of our infrastructure is based around ASP and XML

In theory the whole .Net picture sounds great. All the different languages compiled into a common runtime sounds a great idea to me. Leads to some lovely integration and less hassle trying to fit different technologies together.

The only thing that I'm a bit sceptical about is the fact that J2EE has had a five year head start, and aside from SOAP, .Net relies on a Windows platform, whereas the Virtual Java Machine will run on most. .Net is only in Beta 3 at the moment, whereas Java is on v1.4(?). They've a lot of catching up to do.

Sounds as though it's going to succeed. M$ have got the money to force it to work. They are gambling the whole business on this stratagy shift so it's gonna be interesting.

I'll post some more if anyones interested when I get into it a bit more.

Interesting. I took a look in a manual and it does look like ASP.net is a lot easier to use.... I did a JSP course a while ago, and it looked like Sun had looked at ASP and made it a bit better, now it looks like M$ looked over at JSP and did one better again.

Do you hae any figures on the speed increase that compilation brings? I was a bit sceptical at first, but if it works, what the hell!
