Why is it that they will reveal a few details about a game, then say something like "But that's just a basic example, you'll have to wait for the game to see it in full effect."
Silicon Knights have been doing this with Eternal Darkness for over two years now, since it was first revealed as an N64 title at E3 1999.
Since then it has moved to the Gamecube to what should be a larger and more suitable audience, yet still, with the US launch coming early next year, we're still being teased with snippets of information. Much has been made of the size and depth of the game, somewhere between 40 to 60 hours to complete it. Apparently there will be somewhere in the region of 13 different characters to control throughout the ages as you try to unravel some kind of mystery, yet less than half of these characters have been revealed yet.
The only playable demo that has been shown wasn't even part of the game, just an idea of what it would play like. Lots of running around shooting zombies, showing off the targetting system. It didn't allow for the magic you can use in the game, so that's still something of a mystery.
The sanity meter has been spoken about a great deal, but no one really seems to know the depth of it, just how important it will be. What has been shown is that if you run from monsters your sanity meter will eventually reach it's peak, when it did, the character you control's head exploded. Apparently this is part of a hallucination, these occur as part of the insanity, but this was an over the top example. Other such things will be much more subtle, yet more disturbing. But what does that mean? It's just another dirty little teaser, isn't it?
The more I read about this game, the less I seem to know! All I find is that there's a great deal involved in it, btu Silicon Knights just aren't ready to let us know what yet!
Damn them!
But it's not like they're the only ones, is it Mr Konami?
What was the big idea with releasing a playable demo of Metal Gear Solid2, then staying tight lipped over it for months? Then they go and announce a major surprise and get everyone really interested in it again, but they still haven't given away exactly what happens, and howm have they? No, but I bet you want to know, don't you, and won't be satisfied until you buy the game, and find out!
I like surprises though, but the waiting does get to you a bit. Especially when you know people on the other side of the world have already experienced it! You know that you could easily go to another web site, and find out all of the plot twists, if you want to though, but it's like knowing where your Christmas presents are hidden, but not looking, because you don't want to spoil the moment!
One problem with teasers though, is that they can raise expectations too much. I'm not one to expect too much, usually, but the way those guys at Silicon Knights go on about Eternal Darkess, you can't help but be intrigued, and it would be easy to read too much into what they say, and end up disappointed. Then again, what does it matter if the gamer comes away a little disappointed if they've already forked out for the game?
I like the idea of playing a game but not knowing what to expect till i turn it on! Maybe thats just me though!
