When gaming first started out people played the game for fun, and to fill spare time. Back then there weren’t many games. The first game that really push gaming into the limelight was released in 1972, it was a simple shoot-‘em-up. In the rush to play this game, Japan ran out of 10-Yen pieces. Yes the game that I am talking about is ‘Space Invaders’; it was the first game to have a high score table.
As gaming developed, more emphasis was based on the interaction between two (rarely more) players. Games where simply for interaction between two people, to have fun. One of the main games with this is mind was a game where you moved a bar up and down a screen, to hit a ball to the other side. Then the other player would try to hit it back. (I think it was called Pong)
Then as gaming developed more instead of interaction between two players it was more on the emphasis on the interaction of the player and the game itself. One of these games was the first game that hid parts of the screen from view, it was released in 1980 and was a fast blast-‘em-up. The game I am talking about is ‘Defender’.
Also in 1980 the first ‘Easter egg’ was hidden in a game. This is because a disgruntled coder left his own name stashed away in the game. This lead to the fashioning of ‘Easter eggs’ and secrets hidden within in games. So in a way you could say more emphasis was put on giving the gamer something to find, and have satisfaction in discovering.
Then as gaming developed more, all of these features were able to be brought together more. But still there was always that ‘something’ that made a game sell more than another, weather it be multi-player, special features, realistic or it was fun.
Now jumping to the current time, what is the emphasis now? If you had asked me that about half a year ago I would of said ‘realism’. People wanted to be able to play games that let them do something that they couldn’t do in real life, such as being a spy (James Bond) or a wrestler (WWF). So to do this a game would have realistic graphics, realistic physics, and realistic interactivity.
But as time has gone on we have all done it before, we have all played a spy, a wrestler and a race car driver. So the only thing that would improve this was to make it even more realistic by having better graphics, better physics, and better interactivity. But it just isn’t the same. A lot of players are sitting down and playing these games just because they had nothing to do. They are bored of playing the game, but they just continued playing it. Not all games were like this though as they were the start of the split that is now becoming more apparent.
In this spilt we have games that are trying to be more realistic graphics, more realistic physics, and more realistic interactivity. These games are popular, but gamers are starting to realise it isn’t realism they want! It is more emphasis on the fun, the interaction between the computer and other gamers. So like Nintendo’s new Zelda on the Gamecube, some games are taking a step back from being realistic and instead trying to bring back the true meaning of gaming. That true meaning is to be escapist. People don’t want to do something that could really be done they want fantasy, where they can have fun and get away from life and its problems.
What do you think, as I know some (a lot) people are going to disagree with this! Also what do you think the true meaning of gaming is?
