...yet I hate it. I'm not being big-headed, but I've been playing geetar for about 4/5 years. A couple of years ago I decided to do AS Level music, so I had to take up clasical guitar - which I got quite good at. I was entered straight into my grade 5 which I passed with merit (127/140) and the next grade I do will be my grade 8 (which is the highest before you do degree standard). But now I find that I'm really jealous of people that have just started playing, that come out with really stupid and crazy riffs through their lack of understanding of notes and stuff. I wish I could do that, but I find myself playing the same riffs over and over because I'm in this stupid academic rutt.

I used to be really 'loose' and play loads of different styles and come up with some really good stuff, but now everything seems more 'static'. This has to go here, those have to go there - I wish I'd never learnt all my scales and arpeggios. Of course I'm grateful to my teacher, he really taught me a lot, but now I find it difficult getting back to the music that I want to play. Does anyone else have this problem? It really makes me want to give up playing classical stuff (even tough secretly I quite enjoy it), but I want to pass my Grade 8.

I started playing a month ago...

I rock...

Self taught, got a £4.99 chord book, learned them and tune my ear to play bits in songs, lets see what I can play:

Manics: A Design For Life

Manics: Motorcycle Emptiness

Manics: Found That Soul

Manics: Let Robeson Sing

Radiohead: Street Spirit (my best)

Radiohead: High and Dry

Radiohead: Exit Music

Led Zepplin: Stairway to Heaven

Muse: New Born

OF course thats not all way through and on an acoustic :)

I still rock:

Meanwhile a mate has had it for 7 months and can play one Nirvana song... OH YEAH I RULE

Hmmm maybe I should widen my horizon on bands to play :)

Carey is mindblowing.
I try to play along but it's not easy at all, so many odd time signatures and stupidly complex patterns.

I was raised on the old school drummers, hence my influences are Keith Moon and John Bonham.
Hit 'em hard and who cares about paradiddles and flim-flams?

Danny Carey still amazes me every time I put on any Tool record.

Is he renound in the drumming world?

Never had any schooling either. I learned drums off of my own back, although my Grandad was an inspiration for me.

But er, I learned through listening to other players, whether it be Chad Smith, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Igor Cavalera, David Silveria and Danny Carey. I listened to how they play, how they approach the drums, try and mimick these stylings, then go off on my own and come up with my own style.

Oh yeah and my teacher was always too off his face to teach me anything.

Anyway my love was to pick up a record and learn every song off it by ear. Still do it now but my amp's a bit large to keep in my living room so its a bit more difficult.

My brain used to be fairly wonky, but now I've been drilled so that everything has to fit. One day I'll break down and in the middle of the street just shout "It doesn't have to fit!" and start running about freeing caged animals and stuff. One day.

I can see how it might be.
I have, at various points, taken piano lessons and guitar lessons but my brain is just not programmed for scales, semi-quavers and drop-notes.

I hit things, it's what I do and what I do well.
And everyone needs a drummer, so I'm never out of a band to play in.
If I ever have kids, I am going to force them to learn violin.
They may hate me until they hit 20+, but then they'll be so grateful.
I know I would be.

I taught myself. I played for over 3 years before I was forced to take lessons or fail music. It just all seems a bit boring now.

See, now I am the opposite. Completely self-taught.
I only know to play how I know, which means listening to the music and just playing until something fits.
It's a bit different on drums as opposed to guitar, but still the same principle.
You become so bogged down in major/minors, 4-bar ghost note crap that you forget to just play.

When my boys are coming up with new stuff and they say to bass-player "In the middle eight, when we go B-minor to 3rd C, arpeggio for 2 bar then back to normal" whilst I sit there and look happy.
They have to turn to me and say "Ok, the bit that goes da-da-da-durrr-da-da-da-daaaaa" and then I get it.

But I don't care if I haven't had schooling, I hit it harder than anyone else and I have a distinct style that means I can knock myself out mid-song and break a ride cymbal every 8 months through smashing the living crap out of it.

Rock
