hey i'm pretty new to the group think my last post was months ago.

Anyway just wanted to know peoples opinions on film censorship in this country as i think that the stuff being censored is just stupid.

for example take "Tomb Raider" the was about 3mins of cuts in this film which were mainly head butts and knive scenes that were cut.

Other films that were cut over here were The Matrix and pitch black (thats all i can think of off the top of my head) which is why i now buy region 1 DVD's as the us hardly ever cuts a film plus it's cheaper :)

but these little cuts are everywhere from tv shows like buffy and angel to even computer games (remember the edited tekken 3 ending)

so what do you lot think of these cuts that are made, are they a big deal to you or not?

Sorry if I was a little forceful. I was in a generally bad mood when I arrived home today... Anyway, the BBFC site is www.bbfc.co.uk and not only does it provide news on recent rulings it's also an excellent source of release dates, far better than DVD sites, as it gets the films before anyone.

The reason they cut tombraider, which you can find out if you go to the BBFC's website, is so that it got its 12 certificate. Cuts are not forced by the BBFC, they tell a film maker what certificate the uncut film would receive and then advise on how it can be lowered if the film maker decides that he wants the certificate lower, recommending scenes to be cut. Only in exceptional circumstances will the BBFC call for a cut, for instance if a scene is illegal, and this is only when they are faced with banning a film. For instance, Mexican film "Amores Perros" was thoroughly investigated due to the incredibly realistic dog fight scenes it contained. These were done under the strict supervision of the RSPCA equivalent and so the film was passed uncut, getting an 18 certificate: no complaints there because it was never going to get anything less. Conversely, another film, 'Baise Moi' was required to cut a scene because of it portrayed a violent rape, which the BBFC deemed unacceptable and in contravention of its code.

So don't whinge about tombraider and civil liberties please.. this is what the BBFC said:

-------
BBFC REQUIRES CUTS TO LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER TO ACHIEVE '12' RATING

Concern about the violence and in particular the glamorisation of knives in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has resulted in cuts to the film. In order to achieve a '12' rating the distributor has agreed to remove a number of elements which are unacceptable under the BBFC Guidelines for that category. The Guidelines in turn reflect the standards of acceptability set by the British public in the course of the major consultation exercise culminating in their publication in September 2000.

The film, which received a 'PG-13' rating in the United States, is the latest big Hollywood action film aimed at children but containing scenes which are too violent for younger viewers. Mission Impossible II and Charlie's Angels were similar recent examples of 'PG-13' films appealing to the young whose violent content was, nevertheless, unacceptable in the UK at '12'. In their case, the distributors opted for the more restricted category of '15' rather than the cuts necessary for '12'.

Robin Duval, Director of the BBFC said:

"The natural audience for Lara Croft is the 12 to 15 age group, but the Board's Classification Guidelines make it clear that at '12' the glamorisation of weapons such as knives and the graphic illustration of dangerous techniques such as head-butts and throat chops are unacceptable. The film company has responded positively to the BBFC's concerns with cuts to those elements and to other violent content at several points in the film.

"Lara Croft: Tomb Raider remains an exciting action-filled experience whose content should not now surprise audiences familiar with '12' rated material from the Bond films onwards. As with the Bond films, the combat, gunplay etc is mitigated by the absence of graphic or bloody detail and by the generally fantastical setting of the story. The Board's concern about knives, however, reflects the fact that they are much more readily accessible in the UK than the other more unfamiliar equipment characteristic of these films."
-------

Note that the film's producers wanted it to be a 12. The film could have been left uncut, but parents just don't buy their kiddies 15 certificate films for Christmas and Tombraider is certainly aiming for the yuletide market. Don't blame the BBFC the film makers know what is within their rights, and what isn't. Ultimately this isn't even an issue of censorship; censorship is when you wilfully stop people seeing something. In this case the BBFC merely advised a cut so that the producer could get his lucrative 12 certificate and make a killing at Christmas. Cut not Censored.

I'm not a massive fan or banning films, but in recent years very few films have been banned or cut, and almost all of the films that have been banned have been abhorrant. I am entirely against the banning of a film for political reasons, but I fully support what the BBFC do. Don't moan about them if you don't have your facts straight.
