I've spent most of today on my laptop. My laptop being a 233mhz processor and lacking the graphical capabilities of an advanced card of 16mb or so, the games I could play was pretty limited.

I tried most games but most ran terribly slow and just couldn't be played. Then I found my copies of some FPS original gaming classics.

Going with time I started with Wolfenstein 3D. It was really fun but there were some things that I just hated. I hated the maze like structure of the levels. I got lost continuously and it just wasn't as fun as the likes of Goldeneye where you get mission objectives. In Wolfenstein 3D you could also not jump, you could not strafe, you could not look up and down. This created quite a few problems. When you turn a corner if you look the wrong way you are 50% buggered as there is usually a guard lurking around one side of the corners. I have to turn 180 degrees to shoot him and because the games quite slow I usually would lose quite a lot of health. The fact that I could not look up and down was also irritating. I could never tell whether I was aiming correctly. It was basically annoying. Jumping although not needed in the game I missed quite alot. In many a FPS I will jump when not doing anything the same as I will beep my horn in GTA3 when I'm driving around. I get bored okay? Then there was the fact you couldn't go right up to doors and they seemed to open when you pressed space from miles away. The sound.. don't get me started on the sound. Annoying beeps agigated me until it got to the time where I had to turn them off. Beep, beep, beep, beep whether I'm shooting, hitting a wall or opening a door. Grr..

Then I played Doom! The sound was much better, the graphics were much nicer and more importantly you could strafe by holding down alt and moving. However I soon noticed when you pressed the use key space as well as holding ALT i kept minimising DOS so it got rather annoying. You could also get closer to the doors so that was also nice. But the best bit was the fact that there were some nice new weapons. With Wolfenstein I had to deal with the knife, a pistol and a sort of machine gun. The machine gun was okay but it got a bit boring after a while. Doom however had those nice fists, that pistol, that shotgun and the chaingun. Great stuff.

It was playing Doom I started to wonder what I missed most about these games. Playing these after playing the likes of Max Payne, Soldier of Fortune, Operation Flashpoint and Counter-strike they just seemed weird. I missed the great numbers of weapons, the sounds of gunfire, the varieties of gameplay rather than collecting keys and making your way around mazes, I really missed the way you could look up and down and strafe.

What would you say is the most important aspect of a FPS to you? What could you not do without. I'd have to say the ability to manoveure. Limitations like not being able to strafe and looking up and down made it not as fun to play as more modern games. In Doom and Wolfenstein I felt like I was trapped in a box and couldn't move my eyes or legs and instead I was in a little car which I had to turn. It's the little things that make a game I think.

I think AI is also an important aspect of an FPS. I still can't think which aspect I need the most though. They all seem to complement each other. The killing in Soldier of Fortunes fun as well...

Guns. Whacking great guns.
Operation Wolf.
You were static and the enemies paraded in front of you like they were on the generation game conveyor belt.
But you had guns.

QUAKE!
Quake revolutionised gaming with it's ability to look up and down and it had brilliant graphics for the time (it used good graphics cards.

How could you forget it?!?!

I don't have much tme.. because i'm writing this in the Dream team adverts, but i think an FPS is made from loads of different things. It's judged on the complete package...

Look at Goldeneye... it was so 'real' it was great... the guns were believable, the characters were... the levels, maps and locations too.

Compare this to Quake 3... Rail Guns?! Mutants?! I know M was no supermodel, but come on... that bad? Well, actually... :D

Okay... look at Turok... it's like a 'half and half' game... the realistic side of things is... that there were dinosaurs, and there are bows and arrows... humans as well. The unrealistic side is that there are wierd guns, well, cool guns... but even the US Special Forces or her Majesty's Kick-Áss-Touch-Us-And-You-Die Guards, have nothing like them!

Of course, storyline is just as important as having Real Guns... i.e. NOT! Look at Serious Sam... quite unserious, if you think about it. Shooting wierd aliens with Dopom-like guns... yet, it got rave reviews, just for being fun to play...

'What makes an FPS?' is a very vague question, and i'm sure you'll get loads of answers... but there isn't really 'an answer' You can have any combination of attributes... it's always the final, and complete package that's graded!

Nice Post...

The expectations of gamers has increased hugely.

I have Unreal Tournament + several mods, and desmos of AVP2 and Red Faction on my PC. The first two are great, the latter not. Anyway, the other day I played Doom. Without doubt, it is the most boring thing I did that day, and probably the ugliest!

When Doom came out it innovated and changed the way we thought about games. After this, no self respecting FPS would dare go out without a wide(r) range of guns, have boring limited bad guys or 'great' graphics. Half Life came out, and then the goalposts moved. Now they needed more guns, more graphical splendour, but also in game cut scenes, good AI, and a plot that was maybe better than 'saving the world'.

Now we are hopefuly getting on to better things, but what are they (see my How...... forum - if it is still on the fron page of FOG Prime - Sorry about the plug ;-) )
going to do?

We need revolution not evoloution. What next?

PS. What happened in between Doom2 and Half Life with FPS I cant remeber.
