What is the face of a gamer these days? Well, probably like it's always been - pasty white and spotty. Games and gaming have long struggled to shake off their nerdy image and although the cool gamer is a long way off, headway has been made.

I recieved my first console at the age of four and what a machine it was. Like many I started out on an Amiga 500. The games by todays standards were rubbish. That didn't matter though, I was in control. At that time I squbbled with my brother for the joystick but now he has just a small gaming interest, whereas I at 13 am still trying to save the princess and find that stupid key.

The point I'm fumbling at is that gaming is in the genes and the true gamer has no interest in passing crazes, he's (and it's always a he) in it for the long haul. The Playstation or PSX to those in the know brought the joys of gaming to the mass market but in truth it's never been away. Through Mega-Drive, Mega CD, N64 there has always been a format keen for your gaming dollar. Playstation broke the mould by targeting it's wares at the "Loaded" generation, no longer a geeky pursuit - it was cool to chill out with the lads over a round of "Colin MacRae Rally".

I have friends who called me Captain Caveman for never going out, while they now brag of their times on Dreamcast "Crazy Taxi". So to my mind, today's game player has no specific profile. I've seen Barbie games, fishing games and inumerable "sim" games, where you can create any world they wish. Game players differ from gamers who never left their smelly bedrooms or sacks of Doritos in the first place. My own easy to check if your partner or friend is a gamer is as follows:

1)They know the "Digitiser" page number on 4-Tel off by heart (it's 480-486!)

2)They have a copy of 'Final Fantasy Part One'

3)Their best pals are called Mario and Luigi

4)They got all nine epilouges in Resident Evil 3'.(It only takes 27 hours!)

5)At the gym they chase golden rings!

So today's gamers have few friends, a pasty complexion and are currently stuck on "Dino Crisis 2". Dosen't sound like anyone I know...

Thanks for reading.

I'm a bronzed Adonis with chicks hanging off me wherever I go. And I'm also a hardcore gamer. But hey, some guys have got everything.

....

I'm also a compulsive liar and a fantasist.

By the way, Digitiser is now on pages 480 to 487.

Okay, I admit it - I'm a gaming nerd!
