However, I want to get out of this other domain host and transfer to Freeola, but the domain has expired yesterday and needs renewing. I'm guessing it has to be renewed first and the ownership properly transferred to me before I can move it?
Appgamer.net domain is renewed. Seems to be up for some but not for others and site came up for me earlier today but not now. Is this something to do with the DNS settings changing when renewing after expiry? Any way to make this happen faster?
I'm not sure how your current host does things, but when domains with us have passed a certain threshold the DNS are changed. Once renewed these are generally put back within 24 hours and are up-and-running for everybody. Unfortunately DNS take as long as they take to propagate, but anything over 5-6 hours is generally classed as 'slow', there is no way of speeding this up.
When I move over, how does the email work. I don't have an email hosting with the other service as far as I know but the Google mail is linked to the domain. I don't really understand how that works. Will it still work without me moving anything other than the 2 domains across?
If you are using Gmail for the account then moving the domain name should not affect the running of this.
However, I am working from the assumption that you are using the Gmail account directly (i.e. as a direct contact address for the site) and not using their 'POP-pickup' service which will bring in e-mail from an outside address ([email protected], for example). If THIS is the case, then this will stop working just as soon as the transfer is initiated as these are likely removed immediately when released by your current host.
lastly, it says that it takes an average 10 days. In that time, will the site be up still with no (or little) downtime?
Unfortunately, due to the nature of .net transfers the site will likely be unavailable for the duration of the transfer. The 10 working day period is normally the longest we would expect the transfer to take, normally I will see these complete in a week. Obviously, this is very dependant on whether or not you are able to change the admin e-mail address to one we control.
The .uk domain is much simpler as we are able to take control of this almost as soon as the IPS is confirmed as changed. The only downtime should be the period from you requesting the transfer via GetDotted, and re-uploading the web files once complete. The site should be available for Freeola hosting within a couple of hours of you confirming the transfer, usually less.

If I can move it all across quickly and easily and then have decent freeola service it will all be worth the extra money.
Hopefully they'll cooperate.
And yes, the mail points to the address so is currently inaccessible too.
We may have one or two issues with the admin e-mail address due to the WHOIS privacy, but we can deal with that should you decide to bring this over to us.
In your last post you referenced Gmail hosting for the e-mails. Was this an un-related comment or is the MX (mail) record of the domain pointing to them currently? (Again, something which I am unable to currently check). It is possible to keep the current DNS settings when transferring a domain to ourselves, just make sure that you do not select the relevant option as part of the process :)
Bear in mind though, the longer the domain name is left in it's expired state the greater the chance the current DNS settings will be removed by the current host, not everyone is as generous as us when dealing with expired domains!
The one outstanding issue is keeping my Google Mail hosted accounts, which are highly important for me to maintain.
As a general rule, TLDR's (.com, org, net etc.) are automatically renewed upon transfer in. .uk's are not but I'm fairly certain we will be able to take this as well, even if it is directly through Nominet.
The main sticking point will be the current host of the domain, some companies may not be willing/able to make changes to expired domain names so a renewal may be necessary if you do not want to wait for the domain to be deleted before re-registering.
Bear in mind though, if the domain is a TLDR the 1 year renewal upon transfer is mandatory, heavily discounted, but mandatory, regardless of when the domain name expires.
I'm hoping if he renews then I can just transfer over to a Freeola account in my name, to avoid having to change things twice.
Also not sure whether the email is hosted there as well, need to keep all our email addresses.
I see it expired on the 4th Feb!
Freeola will no doubt be along to explain how all this works and what you can do but from my understanding you (or someone) will need to renew before you can start a transfer, and possibly pay a recovery fee as it's gone past the expiry date! :¬(
FYI Some providers (even Freeola!) also charge for a 'transfer out'.
What happened here? Did you try to renew but it failed or did you not realise it was due for renewal?
I see the site's unavailable so it will be costing you £'s - double :¬(
Let us know how you get on.
