"Every month in NGC, or any games-related magazine/website for that matter, there is always a piece about sales figures - who’s beating who, what consoles changing places in one regions etc etc. I think there’s too much emphasis placed on news that Gamecube sales aren’t as expected, Xbox is overtaking, PS2 has an unassailable lead, blah, blah, blah. Why the fuss over sales targets and what not? Leave that to the number bods. Sure, it’s interesting to read about, but I’d rather there was a bigger focus on the actual games themselves. Does GC’s sales jeopardise Nintendo as a company? No. But still the scaremongers come out with their ‘Nintendo are going ‘multi-console’ claptrap. But the point is, do any NGC readers actually care?
Yes, I would prefer it obviously if Nintendo was better placed in the market. Yes, I would prefer it if they pulled their fingers out and started some top-notch advertisng, and giving the PAL regions titles like Animal Crossing. But do I care if sales figures exceed a certain amount for the month? No. As I write this I’ve just read GC sales have exceeded PS2 sales. Yes, I’m glad this has happened, but it doesn‘t have any effect on my opinion of Nintendo, their consoles or their games, and whilst Nintendo themselves will be pleased, I daresay it won’t change their approach to making top-quality games an iota.
To be honest, (and this may attract scorn from certain quarters) I’m glad the situation as it is. Like this, we don’t get a plethora of money-grabbing developers dispensing dross in the search for a quick buck. As it is now, are Gamecube owners suffering because of it? I know I’m not. This may not be altruistic, but it’s others fault if they lack the vision to look past Sony. And anyway, most people don’t have the money to buy twenty titles, over say, the Christmas period, so I’m not losing sleep over the fact that there aren’t a load of games coming out on the console the size and frequency of the PS2, because I wouldn’t be able to afford them all even if they did.
Maybe there’s an element of us being in some sort of exclusive club, who knows? (Sometimes I look at another clueless consumer picking up Random Sequel 7 on PS2, think of Zelda, Mario and Samus et al) All I can say is that we’re are not the ones who missing out on fantastic games the calibre of Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine. Nintendo repeatedly say they are happy with the Gamecube’s position, if you’re going to get all financial about it, check Nintendo’s balance sheet - GC, GBA and Pokemon-related sales show the coffers are well and truly swelling, and recent comments are defiant. “The day we stop making hardware is the day we leave the console business is the day we leave the videogame business”, were the words of Satoru Iwata. I think that says it all."
Oh, and the change of the name can be attributed to long-held aspiritations to chnage and the fact I've just seen Excellent Adventure on DVD -which rules.
Bill and Ted's most excellent adventures?
All that telephone box time travel. Yay! :D
> Does anyone else think this is the most brilliantly named thread ever?
No.
YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
Sorry. I shall now read your post. I imagine you got that a lot.
