Think about how far gaming has come. From the simple 2D Pong to the textured 3D photo-realistic Shenmue. From the “beeps” of Pacman to the full surround sound Playstation 2 experience. One thing however has stayed the same- the controller. While immersion in games has been improved in graphics, sound and story, players still find themselves controlling characters through the means of pressing coloured plastic buttons- certainly far from real life.

However, with the advent of new technological inventions this is all set to change. In fact, some aspects of Virtual Reality are already with us. The rumble pack, for example, was originally a force feedback device used in the operations of remote robots- allowing people to feel what the robot was doing. There are also peripherals, ranging from light guns to fishing rods and even maracas, that allow players to be completely in control of the game. However, it is highly unpractical to have a different peripheral for every game, and therefore the idea of the controller itself must be changed.

In the past it has been Nintendo who have lead the way in controller design- creating analogue stick, shoulder buttons and introducing the rumble pack. However, the N-Cube’s controller fails to revolutionise the interaction with games. Sure it may have analogue buttons, but how about using something other than pieces of plastic that people hit- surely Nintendo could think something up? How about using tilt sensors in the pad so that when you move the pad forwards, the character moves forwards- it worked for Microsoft’s freestyle pad. This would be great for driving games- tilt the pad a little for easy corners and far for tight corners. Now that would be an immersing experience. So come on Nintendo- think of something new… PLEASE?

BTW, Nintendo have patented the "G-Force Pack", and "Motion Sensor Pack". Could they be talking about tilt sensor controls for games that I was talking about earlier... maybe, just maybe!

By the way, does anyone out there have a Microsoft Freestyle Pro Joypad- or any other pad that uses tilt sensors to create in game movment? Are they any good?
