So? Answer, the question..... are you not entertained? Let me put it this way: Are you satisfied with what you have? If not, what are you looking for?

Ok, so i could be refering to absolutely anything with those questions but what i actually am refering to is the games market. Are you satisfied with what you see around you?

Looking at the attitude i have noticed on these forums, it seems that peoples view of games is not unlike their view of life. What do you mean i hear you cry!

Well, we go from from day to day with our preconceived ideas of what life is like. It only takes one small thing though, and our outlook changes completely - the way we feel about things has been almost completely 're-written'. With games it seems to be the same: they are announced, they are eagerly awaited, and eventually they are released. We buy them, we play them and we go round thinking they are the best thing ever. Then one day, the brand new sequel is announced and we almost tend to forget that previous game we wanted so much. Yes we may still play it but our thoughts are towards the new game far more than what we have already. We start longing for this new 'stunning' game which is to be 'bigger' and 'better' than what we have!

My point? Well, it seems that we are constantly looking for for what we don't have. MGS2 will come and *eventually* will go. For many it won't die but it certainly wont be foremost on their minds. It is kind of a 'quick fix' for their present desires. I am not saying this is necessarily a bad thing - it just seems as if the games we play don't really have any meaning. Ok, so 'its just a game' but games have far greater impact on you if they 'hit home'to you. They make playing them far more enjoyable and you are far more likely to 'continue the relationship' as it were.

Something about Mario Kart on the SNES hit me. Maybe it was the fact that i played it in my childhood and it still brings back memories, i don't know. The fact is that i still play it and it remains my favourite game of all time.

So maybe there is a point to this post(or maybe not, take it as you will) in that i think its about time the developers changed their production techniques. I think we need something fresh. All we seem to see are the same old formulae for games churned out again and again. Ok, so this isn't bad because our favourite genres are continually brought up to the latest standards but maybe a new type of game should be made. At the moment we may get the latest FPS (if thats our preference) and finish it....... but what then? It seems that its done and we await the next big FPS. Ok some some games are a laugh for playing again with your mates but in general, we look forward to things not yet here rather than valuing what we do have.

Basically, i think that as the games designers have the future of gaming in their hands, it is their responsibility to 'take us to the next level' as it were. Rather than give us a load more of the the same 'updated' game, why not take us somewhere new...... somewhere where games may mean something and even be valued.

cheers for reading!

With five games in one day, no doubt I've been entertained since Wednesday.

At the moment, I'm quite happy. The GBA has failed to impress me so far, and that is a disappointment.

But the PS2 is really coming into it's own now. Airblade, Max Payne, THPS3, Half-Life, Soul Reaver 2, Devil May Cry, Crash 5, SSX Tricky etc, all of these are games I would like to own. MGS2 is still to come, as well as a couple of Star Wars games (Jedi Starfighter and Racer II.) So yes, I am entertained.

As for the future and the NEXT generation of consoles beyond the Xbox - I'm already rubbing my hands together in anticipation.

I've been interested in games for quite a long time, but it's only been recently with the arrival of the next-gen consoles that my casual interest hardened into obsession. I would have to say that on the whole I am constantly amazed by modern games.

In the days of the Master System, NES, Megadrive and Snes, I used to dream of playing games with graphics, storyline and gameplay as can be found in current releases.

I find games such as GTA3, Jet Set Radio, Devil May Cry and the Shenmue series utterly amazing to look at and play.
Of course my imagination can visualize even better graphics and even better games, but I think we should be content with what we currently have at our disposal.

As for the future and the NEXT generation of consoles beyond the Xbox - I'm already rubbing my hands together in anticipation.

:-) You've probably opened the floodgates for 'nice post' though now, unfortunatley.

I'm not saying that people are predictable or anything.

Yeah me too. Just seems people are always looking for things such as the gamecube to come out. Ok so yes i am looking forward to the newer consoles but not to the point i would pay an extortionate (in my view) price to import one! I am quite happy playing my N64 and playstation for the time being. As we seem to agree, theres no point overlooking what we have now because there are so many worthwhile gamesout there which could easily pass us by!

Yeah, this is something I've mentioned before, most games now are based on games older than some of the people on these forums! All that seems to have happened is the graphics have moved on and the games have gotten bigger, it's very rare that a game comes through that doesn't have it's routes in the early days of gaming.

I don't think that all developers are taking a wide enough view of the what they have to work with, and it's potential.

Some games, games by the likes of Rockstar, for instance, seem to have taken a wider scope on things. They give you much more freedom within each area, so you feel more in control, more like it's YOUR game, not just pressing buttons to watch more of the preset story.

The thing is we've now pushed graphics to an amazing level, and developers are realising that they're all so good, graphic wise, the gamer will no longer be choosing his gamees based on which is best looking. No, today we need something fresh, and seem to be getting it. Even EA have completely re-worked the passing system for their FIFA franchise, after it has been the same for a number of years. They can longer compete with Konami by having better looking players with real names, and a pop song playing during the title screen.

On to another subject in your post, am I satisfied?

Well, yes. I'm quite happy with the games I'm playing at the moment. They may be similar to games gone by, but we don't need every game to be completely fresh, do we? I'm quite happy with developers just pegging on a few new features to something that already exists. But sometimes, in some genres, there's nothing left to add, and itdoes need a re-think.

I can't help but feel that beat 'em-up's peaked in the 2D days. Street Fighter 2 (and it's many re-incarnations) was the King. Trying to add other features to beat 'em-ups, such as separate power meters, hasn't really brought anything new. The move to 3D has been one that's graphical only. More often than not it's limited, because developers can't really do anything with the existing formula.

SO, yes, I like games today, and feel the games of tomorrow are promising, but I don't see the point of looking too far ahead, just enjoy what you've got now.
