Now, any person that has the slightest interest in arcade games will know about Time Crisis 2. You know, the old duck n' shoot classic from Namco? Well my friends, TC2 has come home!
TC2 for the PS2 is a direct port from the arcades, with a few minor changes. The graphics utilise the power of Sony’s Next-Gen console, smoothing out rough edges, and increasing detail levels. Some of the textures from the arcade have been improved, but the game-play remains the same.
So, what is the game? Well, no big plot twists or interesting themes here - Bad guy wants to take over the world, and against unbelievable amounts of enemy soldiers, you have to stop him! Now, you really do need a Light Gun for this. The TC2 package with the Guncon 2 is a good one, as it works out cheaper.
The Single player arcade mode is very short. EXTREMELY short. But you'll be glad to hear that there are many other options in the game. Play through the arcade modes a few times, and you can unlock cheats, such as infinite ammo or shotgun mode. This adds to the excitement of the game, though when using these modes, the sense of achievement is significantly less.
Time Crisis 2 Is a short game, but a variety of difficulties are included. Easy is what it says, complete child’s play, but the hardest mode presents a challenge even for seasoned arcade players. You begin with 1 credit, and then each time you die in arcade mode, you will be given another, up to a total of nine (My record is completing it in 2 on the hardest mode)
Another mode un-lockable by completing arcade is Crisis mission. A new, never before seen sub-game, Crisis Mission will push your skills to the limits. Whether its killing 20 enemies in a minute, or taking out a guy on a fast moving train with one bullet, Crisis mission is great fun, and adds to the longevity of the game.
If they weren't giving us enough to play with, Namco have also added 3 other modes! Agent trainer lets you hone your skills on the firing range, great for accuracy competitions with mates. The original arcade clay pigeon game 'Shootaway 2' has been added, as well as an un-lockable 3D version. Namco’s quick draw action game 'Quick and Crash' is also included.
And for those of us who enjoyed paying £2 in the arcades, just so we could use both guns at once, Namco have created the double gun mode. Although buying an extra gun is costly, getting an old Guncon may be worth it just for this - play through the arcade mode with twice the firepower!
And all that is just for single player. Every single mode mentioned above has a two player option. Challenge your Dad to a good old game of Clay pigeons, or play though arcade mode with a friend at your side!
Now, while playing in spilt screen mode is enough for most of us, those with serious cash are in for a treat. You know the PS2 is ready for use with an ‘I-Link’ kit? No? Well, it means that with the aid of special equipment TWO Televisions can be linked up to the console - that’s right, its the real Time Crisis 2 experience in your own home. Unfortunately, I don’t have the money!
The only problem with this game is its length. It is short. VERY short. Yes, plastering enemies with your weapons is fun, while it lasts. The story mode is short, and it won't take long to complete. Yes, there are extra game options, but they don’t prolong the experience for more than a few weeks. After that, you'll just be going back to have some fun when your mates come round.
PROS
If you liked the arcade version, you'll love this!
A light gun game in your own home!
Extra modes!
CONS
short - VERY short
PS, I know this is not the place for a review, but on ukreviews, you cant get feedback or discuss it, which I want to do.
This was a very good post, I agree with everything you have said. I have the game and gun, and do find the game to be fun. As you have mentioned, the size of the game is a prblem amd can be easy to complete, although I still have to complete it on hard mode.
Has anyone else found the Clay Pigeon shooting to be really hard, or have I just got a crap aim?
