I think I have a problem. When I first bought my PS2 I thought my gaming life was complete, that at my stage of life this was going to be the best it could get before I had to become responsible. My anticipation had built up over months and months of hype… just the mention of the phrase ‘emotion engine’ had me shivering with anticipation. I was one of the unlucky ones who hadn’t pre-ordered and had to wait until June to buy my PS2, but it didn’t matter – the fact that I had already put £300 to one side in my head was enough to keep me going through those bleak months.

So I’ve had my PS2 for 6 months now and over the last few weeks I’ve started to drift away from it. Granted, I am more of a casual gamer (see other topics for arguments over what that means!) but I’d still find the time to get an hour or so in most evenings of the week. Nowadays I’m lucky to get a couple of hours of gaming in a week, even though my lifestyle doesn’t appear to have changed.

What the hells going on? First game I had was SSX – man I played that to death! It was the only game I had for the PS2 (probably the only decent game for the first 6 months too) and I was hooked. It lasted me a good few weeks and I couldn’t get enough of it. I even bought myself another dualshock so I could play the missus and hurl abuse at her for being a limp wristed gamer (note: this does not apply to all women, just mine).

Then came the news…. GT3 was out soon! I, like all had seen the preview movies and those glorious screen shots, was bubbling over with anticipation. Just to make it better I won it as my first GAD win and when it popped through my letterbox on release day I was ecstatic. It became my mission to complete the game 100% but somewhere down the line I just got… bored, I guess.

Bored because the game wasn’t good enough? Nope. Bored because the graphics were sloppy? Er, nope. Bored because it was too easy? Hmmpphhh… NO! Games started to come and go, hours spent playing started reducing and I found myself just not having as much fun as I should be. GTA3 tickled my neurones for a while I admit, but now I have hit a dull phase. Then I realised why…I used to look forward to every decent release, but with the saturated markets we have today I never get a chance to be excited. God knows how many titles are released every week (many of high quality), but it never gives you the chance to settle down with one game – there’s always another nipping at its heels. It’s no longer become a race to get a better game, it has become a race just to get a game regardless, or if you’re lucky to get one before everyone else.

I guess that’s what hunters call the ‘thrill of the chase’. Well, they know what they can do with their Bugles…

Yes, I agree with the previous posts in that I drift in and out of serious games concentration. This happens with lots of things for me such as watching football, reading books and *shock* going to the pub. Ok I dont loose interest in the pub but my funds preclude me from spending excessive periods there. Also as you get older hangovers DO get worse.

Anyway enough senseless babble - my point for this is a happy one. I enjoyed Grand Theft Auto when it was released originaly and had it on PC. When I heard about gta3 on the ps2 in 3d I was really looking forward to it. However there was not huge hype like in the case of gt3 or FIFA etc. and the magazines were quite critical of it. However when I did buy it (I only had one game before it - GT3) I was very pleasantly suprised andeven though I have now completed all the missions I still play on it due to the multitude of sub missions etc on offer and because of the shear fun. I got Pro Evolution Soccer last week and spend half my time on this and the rest on gta3. gt3 is purely gathering dust now even though it is still a great game.

My point is that in very few cases the hype some games get do any benefit to the gamer and sometimes get your hopes up too high. We all know why the companies do this as it will increase sales but it still spoils the end result. The moral of this story is dont rely on hype, magazine reviews and advertising and rely on good old fashion gut reaction and if your not sure why not try renting it first?

I think its the over-eagerness which gets me. With a constant barrage of games out every Friday you have this feeling like you don't want to be left behind. But games nowadays are very expensive and its almost impossible to keep up, so inevitably you do get left behind.

It's stupid I know, because the titles I have are fantastic games.. some like I have never played before, but I always get the feeling that there will be a worthy successor released within a couple of weeks and it has a negative effect on my perception of my current games.

Odd that.

I find this happens to me. Not because I'm bored of it, but there are times when I'm too buisy or just plain don't want to play.

It happens.

But not often :)

I know what you mean, and if you're anything like me, it's just a phase you're going through.

I can sometimes go weeks without being that interested in playing my games - both PS2 and PC - and yet find it hard to pinpoint why. It's not because they're not interesting, because they are. There's just something about my mood that stops me playing.

As daft as it may sound, there are also times when I don't play a game because I want to play them all equally; then I can't make up my mind which to settle on, and so don't play at all!

I think there's also a hint of being over-eager for new games. We wait and wait for a game we know will be great, and as soon as we get it, we think "Oh, okay..." and are immediately waiting for the next 'big thing'.

At the time of writing, I haven't played a game on my PS2 or PC for over a week, apart from the Jak & Daxter and Dropship demos on the OPS2M coverdisc. Admittedly a lot of that is down to the fact that I've been working on two websites, but even so, it's bad for me - I'm surprised I haven't had the shakes! :-)

It's not because I'm bored of the games I have - I just haven't been in the mood for gaming. However, with Jak & Daxter and evil May Cry out tomorrow, I have already cancelled the few plans I had for the weekend. I think my PS2 will be on almost constantly.
