As you all know it gets its name because it is shaped like a cube. The console itself is ugly, but Nintendo have proved it really is personality that counts and the Game Cube blossoms in this area. Like Nintendo's other consoles the Game Cube comes with a brand new control pad, unlike Sony's effort for the PS2. The pad looks similar to the PSX pad but it has a whole new range of buttons which will no dougt make gaming better just like the SNES and N64 pads did. The console has four ports on the front compared to the PS2's 2 ports, which means you won't have to waste money on a multitap.
Although there were no playable games at the show Nintendo proved what the Game Cube could do. There were not a great selection of games on show and all of them were sequels, but there was no sign of Mario, instead there was a Luigi game, yes this time Mario's little brother got the chance to shine and he looked great in his new 128 bit look. Another installment of the Zelda series also made an appearence, the game looked amazing and will probably get the same reception as Ocarina of Time did. Another classic gamewhich made an apperence was Metroid this has been long awaited. Even though all thatwas on show were sequels you can garantee that there will be some decent origional gamswhen the Game Cube hits British Shores in 2002. With Rare by their side Nintendo could take gaming to a brand new level.
Nintendo also announced that the games would be on miny DVD's, these are less easy to damage and will make gameplay smoother. If Nintendo managed to make great games on a cartridge, the Game Cube games will be brilliant and will have you playing for months.
Internet gaming is also part of Nintendo's plan, but they have announced that the console will not ship with a modem. This is because you will have the choice between a Broadband and a 56k modem, no prices were announced but expect them to be reasonable inorder to compete withe the PS2 which also ships without a modem and the Dreamcast which does ship with a modem.
So Nintendo have introduced a challenger into the war but the question is can they defeat Sony's Playstation 2, Sega's Dreamcast and Microsoft's Xbox?
