Lord of the Rings could be the film to ignite the imaginations of a whole generation of film goers or it could be the next Dungeons and Dragons. However I think this will be highly doubtful. Having seen the trailers for Peter Jackson's epic in the making I have been in awe of the outstanding attention to detail in his attempt at creating Tolkien's world. The sumptuous location cinematography makes great use of the New Zealand locale in creating a believable environment for our intrepid protagonists to undertake their quest. The special effects are as to be expected of the highest quality using the latest in CGI to create realistic Ork armies during what is presumably a scene from the battle of Paginar Fields from the third book "Return of the king". This is the only reservation which I have regarding the trailers themselves, how much of what is being shown is actually from "The Fellowship of the Ring"? With the back to back shooting of the three films in the trilogy and the short cut montage nature of the trailers it is impossible to differentiate between the three films. However, this is only a minor quibble.

Perhaps the most impressive sequence in the trailers is the mines of Moria sequence which is definitely from the first movie. This shows off Jackson's directional style, a dark subliminal untertone to his movies as he showed in particular in Heavenly creatures. This sequence of the trailer also introduces the Balrog, an impressively created CGI monster which is incredibly realistic. As for the cast itself, it was always going to be problematic finding actors to fill the shoes of Tolkien's legendary ensemble. Casting unknowns in the roles of Pippin, Merry and Sam was therefore a good idea as they will be able hopefully to truly embody their roles, instead of bringing with them the symbolic and contextual signifiers which a true star would bring to the role. The only problem may arise from the casting of Elijah Wood as Frodo; perhaps the Deep Impact star is not ready to carry the weighty quest of Frodo for three movies. One problem that I can foresee with the movie is its attempts at either contemporising the plot to make it more digestible to a multiplex audience particularly in the states. Also the issue of political corrective ness may over shadow the film slightly especially to Tolkien's many adoring fans, male and female. The character of Arwen, the daughter of Elrond has been greatly enhanced to add a strong female presence which the writers deemed to be missing from Tolkien's work. However, there are already strong female roles in the book, although not central roles. The character of Galadriel is a very strong and important character in the narrative flow of the novel as is Arwen although to a lesser extent than her father. Liv Tyler, who took the role of Arwen is a very able actress and extremely beautiful, as anyone who has seen Bernado Burtolucci's "Stealing Beauty" will testify and this will hopefully mean that the extension of Arwen's presence is a welcome one.

The Lord of the Rings looks to be one of the best films of the new millennium, I just hope that it is as breathtakingly inventive and surreally beautiful as Tolkien's work deserves. I for on will be booking my seat at the box office as soon as possible.
