Is Michael Owen really as good as every Liverpool fan thinks, or is he just a highly over-rated player, who tends to have very good 2 month patches of form, in between his frequent hamstring injuries?? To be honest, I think he is over-rated, and even more so at certain points in a season.

I know that loads of you are gunna disagree with me, especially Liverpool fans, but i'm not alone in my opinion (or any of the ones I post all over this site), and I'd like to see your opinions, especially if you're a Liverpool fan, who AGREES with me!!

Yes, he has played well this season, scoring quite a few goals. Especially towards the start of the season, or within the last 2 months for club and country. He scored a good goal against Man United at Old Trafford, and worked hard to double his tally later in that match. And he's been working hard for England (not as hard as Beckham vs. Greece) scoring important goals (especially the Germany ones) in most games. But this kind of form has only been seen in the bigger, more important games. And he seems quieter, and it seems the rest of the Liverpool team work harder in these 'smaller' matches.

Does this mean that Owen is a player who works hard in the games that are more noticeable, so that big name managers and big name sponsors will see what a player he truely is?? And that he isn't really the big name superstar that Liverpool expect him to be??

Or is he a loyal player who likes to get stuck in and work his socks off to the end in every game, just like the fans and the media make him out to be?

Many clubs around the world are always trying to buy Owen, calling him the hottest striking property in England (Beckham being the hottest midfielder), apparently producing bids of around £40m and over for him!! I think it's all rediculous! Especially with the amounts being offered for him! No player is really worth that much, not even Figo or Zidane should have come close. And clubs are currently wasting their time, when he's very happy at Anfield and doesn't want toleave at this point in time.

Owen must be pretty pleased to read all this about himself, but I think that because it's been constantly mentioned, over the years, since he was 17/18, it may have affected him to make him feel over-confident and slightly big-headed about himself, feeling he's a greater player than many of the world's top international stars. And I also think this has had a similar effect on the Liverpool fans. Especially with his loyalty of staying with the club, turning down all other offers. The fans have now been led to believe that he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest players that the world has ever seen!! And all this is thanks to the media speculation that has been created about Owen, from a very young age. Perhaps even too young to handle it!!

So, in conclusion, I still believe that Michael Owen is not as great as he is made out to be. He has been over-hyped by the media, creating great expectations for him in the near future. For both club and country. And this may be pressure that an player with patches of good form, going on and off throughout a season, may not be able to handle at some point in the near future!!

I think that to keep Michael Owen at his best, the media MUST relieve the masses of great pressure and expectations that have surrounded him, for the sake of Liverpool and more impotantly, England!!

What do you all think??

Heskey has great potential, but is goal scoring ratio is pathetic. And his balance is really poor.

I think Owen is definitley needed for his goal scoring, but what about his partner??

I think Heskey. He's improved by miles since his Leicester days, and he plays with Owen for Liverpool.

He's also very pacey and strong, which is very important for beating tough, strong European and world-wide defenders.

I'd rather have Owen playing up front for England than anyone else I've seen in the last decade.

THe only reason he may be over-hyped in this country is becasue he is English. What else do you expect of the media? He and Beckham are Englands golden boys and they aint really got much else to shout about.

Goalwise Henry is the best striker in the country, but that aint everything.

I think Owen may not have such good games for Liverpool becasue of the style of Liverpools play. This aint the creative attacking Liverpool of the past. This is more like Arsenal of the past! So Owen should be praised for anything that he scores, as Liverpool are a very very very defensive team.

You say NOW that Owen and Henry are the best strikers in the Premiership, and Owen's better than Cole, Yorke and Ruud all put together. But Van Nistelrooy can be as great as Owen and Henry, or even greater, it's just gunna take time!! The reason why he's ONLY hit 11 goals in all competitions is cuz of his serious, career threatening knee injury he suffered horrifically, just before last season. And it's gotta take quite a bit of time before we see 'Van the man' back at his very best (like at PSV)!!

It must have really hit him hard to see that he couldn't even kick a ball for a year, and especially that his £19m 'dream' move to Old Trafford had collapsed, right infront of his and Fergie's eyes!! He must have felt heart broken (as well as the intense knee pain)!! You'd feel the same if it was your dream move to your/the number one club, worldwide!! I know how painfull it is to 'strain' your knee ligaments (from footballing experience), but to 'tear' your knee ligament must be the male equivalent of a female giving birth!! And women say that's the worst pain ever!!

So if we all give Ruud a bit more time (not that anyone's critisising him) he'll soon be back to his PSV-esque form, after settling in better in England and fully recovering from the effects of 'that knee injury'. Hopefully it'll be in time for next season!! That'll be great for the new manager and team!

Definitely better than Van Nistelrooy, Cole and Yorke put together, anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'little games.' He scores in all games (he scored against Derby on Saturday,) it's just that his goals against teams such as Argentina and Germany are more hyped. He has scored some amazing goals for Liverpool in his career.

I don't believe he is over-rated, just that he is hyped a little too much. As a Liverpool fan, I am delighted that he will be playing for them for a long time, and I currently believe he is the best striker playing in England, closely rivalled by Thierry Henry.
