Behold, the saga of me and my PS2:

When I bought my playstation 2 I knew I *had* to get Tekken Tag. This was not a choice, but a necessity. I used to spend hours playing it’s Predecessors on my Psone, with the game music turned off so could stick a cd on to accompany Armour King’s exerting grunts. I also knew I wanted Fifa 2001. Again, I had enjoyed the predecessors (same situation: sound down, stick a cd on the stereo…) but apart from those 2 games I was not urged to rush out and buy any games. Although I was highly impressed by
the smoothness of both games, and the plethora of graphical prowess at work on the
PS2 demo disc, I found that I didn’t seem to experience the novelty factor of having a new console for more than a day or two. Perhaps it was the fact that the 2 games I had were essentially new just installments of well-worn concepts of old… but I just couldn’t get excited. I was far from disappointed with my new console, I was extremely pleased… but there was a significant lack of the ‘wow factor’ that I had felt when I first dipped
my paws into a Psone box.

I didn’t feel the need to but any PS2 magazines, or scour the newsagents for demo discs either, which I used to do religiously as a Psone owner. It began to frustrate me that I couldn’t seem to get enthusiastic about this new console. I was hearing from all corners how great it was, but I just couldn’t see it. Sure I liked the games I had bought, they were great – but I didn’t *love* them. I didn’t seem to spend all day playing them like before. I would even get bored of using my PS2 after only about an hour of use. I began to think that maybe I just didn’t like consoles that much anymore. Maybe I had
moved on. ……That couldn’t be true ….could it???

Months passed, new titles were released… I had a bad experience with ‘The Bouncer’…I then picked up Onimusha and Resident Evil Code Veronica X. Onimusha was something of a breakthrough… I would spend entire evenings in front of my whirring little black box trying desperately to solve whatever puzzle had me foxed. Resident Evil was fantastic too, but for some reason didn’t overly excite me. Finally I finished Onimusha… and was swamped with a warm sense of victory… yes! I’d done it! phew! …oh… that means I have nothing to play anymore… and so things returned to the way they were… my PS2 became something of an ornament on the living room floor… a resting place for tv guides, dvd cases, and other paraphernalia.

Things went on this way… days turned into nights... weeks turned into months… I even strayed from the ukchatforums website… didn’t post anything for ages … I was suffering from something reminiscent of the Peter Pan stories. Everyone knows if you are away from Never Never Land long enough… YOU FORGET. That part of you vanishes from existence… and, painful though it is.. that’s what happened. It didn’t occur to be to log on to the site, because I was not thinking *games*.

(adopts fireside storytelling manner)

…and so it came to pass that Christmas was rumoured to be just around the corner. I began to see adverts for new PS2 titles… colourful adverts with pretty pictures. I gazed at my dust covered PS2: how had things gotten this bad? How could I have allowed this to happen? I brushed off the dust, pushed the power button and picked up a controller. I began playing. And oh how I played. I played long into to the night, and when it was over… I rested.

I decided to check out the Special Reserve site, to see what had been going on during my period of drought. I saw new releases... so many new releases. I read review after
review… they were good games. Some I had heard of previously, others, were completely new to me… but they all shared something – they were all new… they were all NOW! and goddarn it I was excited! I *AM* excited! There are sooo many good titles
being released at the moment…. I think now is the PS2’s golden hour… there is now a wide range of games, with many original concepts, and stunning takes on old favourites being unleashed.

I realized that the feeling that was initially lacking when I first got my PS2 was the feeling that I now revel in. It is the feeling that there are so many great games out there, and you just can’t get them all at once. That is a *great* feeling… it’s as though you have tapped into a vast, unfathomable dimension of entertainment. …..You will *never* be bored again. Thanks to SSX Tricky, Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry, Max Payne, Tony Hawks 3, etc… I have renewed faith.

I AM RE-BORN.

Brothers and sisters, I thank you for your time.
