As we learn more, we are moving more towards playing the role of God. But is this right because as we make more advances in the area in medicine and science, we are altering the balance of the way things are supposed to be in nature.
For example each time a new drug is brought out to combat an illness/disease, it works for a short while then the invading bacteria become immune to the drug (or pesticide on crops). So then another drug/pesticide is made and then they become immune to that one. Then after a while a super germ is created so in a way we are worse of than we started.
Because these super germs are immune to pesticides, scientists have had to come up with other ways of getting over this problem. One of these ways to combat the problem is to genetically modify crops or humans DNA. But these have problems that are not yet known. And surely these super germs will evolve so the genetically modified crops/humans are no longer a problem for them, as this is how it normally goes in nature. And recently they have found that genetically modified crops are cross-pollinating with organic crops over sixty miles away. This could mean if there is a problem with these crops the whole food chain could be effected. So yet again the problem could be worse than how it started, and we still don’t know of all the consequences yet.
Now scientists are cloning/genetically-modifying animals/humans. There are lots of moral and medical (including physical and sociological) aspects to this. Just like the genetically modified crops, there are problems that are as of yet are unknown. Also we already have a problem of over population. In nature disease, and predators sort out this problem. But seen, as humans no longer have any real predators, disease is the only thing left to help sort out the population problem. But humans are now preventing this by creating ever more powerful drugs to combat the diseases. Then we have people getting artificially impregnated, because they cant have babies. Surely this is another way that nature keeps over population from happening. So the over population problem just keeps getting worse and worse.
Because of over population there is a limited food supply, so to overcome this problem scientists have had to improve the amount of food supply and to do this they have had to create genetically modified crops, because not enough can be grown in the time required. So at the moment it would seem we are just on one downwards spiral, where things just keep getting worse. And we just find ourselves trying to correct our past mistakes with more mistakes.
Just to add to the problem of over population people that are really suffering from an illness that leaves them in constant pain, and they cant do anything because they are totally paralysed so they have to rely on someone to do ‘everything’ for them. Even if they want to kill themselves they cant because someone else has to help them do it, and that is against the law (Diane Pretty). So how can we create ‘artificial’ impregnated humans that are modified that could cause loads of problem? The person who wants to die can say they want to, but the one who is going to be born cant, so how can this be justified? So we have the right to life (even if it isn’t by choice) but we don’t have the right to death by choice even if we are suffering. So do we really have rights, or are we really being dictated to?
From all of these advancements in science, we get a step closer to playing God. But is it right, are we really doing good with it or are we actually making things worse. Unlike every other mammal on this planet we don’t live in harmony with our surroundings. Instead we pollute it, damage it and create lots of problems, which are then are too late to be sorted/corrected. A prime example of this would be the Ozone layer hole. So should we be trying to play the role of God?
Mankind will do *anything* and *then* see what happens.. perhaps because it has no-one to answer to in an immediate sense. The problem comes when man realises decades after the implosion of CFCs and minimised body odour, that that hole in the Ozone layer is really becoming rather big.
You have to feel a bit worried when people coin expressions such as 'Hey, i'm only human'... implying that to be human is to make a mistake - and when you have that as the definition of your species, well... the future doesn't look all that peachy does it?
