But, I have absolutely no problem in pre-ordering, playing then loving this game to bits, and all you do is play dungeons and dragons, aginst a machine rather than living breathing human beings. So is RPG D&D gaming sad?? Well, no, I wouldn't have thought so, so why should the board game be? I'm beginning to think that the boringness and blandness of D&D is just an urban legend, because as a gaming prospect Dungeons and Dragons rules and worlds works brilliantly. Baldur's Gate and Diablo are already well established PC games, with massive followings and online communities. The Final Fantasy series also has it's roots based on a Dungeon's and Dragons theme, so maybe it's time that these things started getting the recognition that they deserve, and now, they will........
The main reason for it is Dark Alliance on the PS2. It will demand attention from the public, because it does something which very few PS2 games have done to date, it raises the standard of PS2 visuals above anything seen before on any system. No RPG game has looked this good, of course Final Fantasy X and XI will probably deal it a massive blow in this department, but with those games still at least 6 months from these shores, Baldur's Gate is the game that all true console RPG games are gagging for.
I assure you this, if you like games with a story, and you like having to develop and discover new abilities, weapons and spells for characters in games, there isn't going to be a better game on the PS2 until FFX, unless of course you have the PS original FF games, but if you do, you've played them already, right???
This will, of course, upset a great majority of D&D players who will shun it because it doesn't use the 2nd edition set of rules which are claimed to be superior. So that's maybe 20 people who won't be buying it then. And Goatboy who has classed it as 'a beard' game.
The other 2 million or so people who will get this game will be quite happy with it, and maybe 90% of them won't give a hoot what rules are being used, another 20% won't have ever heard of Dungeons and Dragons and maybe 10% won't even think of it as an RPG at all.
Visually it looks 'stunning', we're talking about PS2 graphics being brought to a new level here. Next-Gen here we come. I've only seed video clips of the gameplay so far but they were enough to get me drooling. I loved Diablo, I loved PlaneScape: Torment, and these gameplay clips are more of the same RPG goodliness, but with more fluidity of movement, better sound, and all in all more 'fun' to play from the looks of things.
Of course as with most games the proof is in the playing, so I won't know for sure until I've played it, but from what I've seen and read about it so far I've certainly got enough information to add it to my most wanted PS2 games list. Which is why I chose it as my last GAD.
