Try playing an action game without sound - not only is the atmosphere decreased, but the game actualy gets harder - I tried to play Perfect Dark through without any sound, and it was pretty damn hard!
Not only is it very dull, unless you put on your favourite album, but it lowers the atmospere - okay, you can play Championchip Manager without sound, but could you play MachCommander 2 - Or Half-Life or any other game?
Next time you play, listen, and turn it off - It really is very boring - appreciate it!

I agree though, music and sound effects add so much to games that we just don't realise (or appreciate) it.
Imagine if they brought out a new game, but had the likes of John Williams, Nick Kamen and Lalo Schifrin collaborating on the score, Spielberg directing, Robert De Niro and the rest of the cast of Jackie Brown doing all the voice acting, then the only thing left to worry about would be the actual game itself.
Yeah, I'm a huge fan of music used with vision as a means of representation... or film and game music. :0)
Describing emotions and scenery with notes and instruments. It's incredibly clever.
Skies of Arcadia has some of the best music, in the same sense of Star Wars... in saying that: With Star Wars, it kept to certain themes... when Leia was around, then her theme was played, or a plot that involved or wanted to bring the thought of Yoda in, would play his theme.
It's the same with SOA.
