I'm also sure you all have your 'ideal' console right up there in your head right now, and you all have a million and one reasons why it's better than the rest. But consider this...
I went through all the bother to get my Playstation 2 as early as possible to see if it lived up to all the hype. Now I'm a big fan of the PS2, but I must say I was a little disappointed with what Sony's Black box had to offer in the first months. I also went through the agony of shipping an American Gamecube all the way over here on launch, which cost plenty. I was also disappointed with what the Gamecube has to offer. I've now got an order for an American XBOX to be shipped sometime soon. To tell the truth, I'm not expecting miracles.
Ok, getting to the point, I've been collecting consoles since the days of the ZX Spectum, the Atari series and the Commodore 64. And through all of this past experience I can say one thing only. It doesn't matter what console you buy, because it's the games that make the console. Yes the XBOX has the fastest specs, and yes, Nintendo have a supposed 'huge range of titles' and PS2 has all of the backwards compatibility.
But honestly, what was the last GREAT game you played? The one that you couldn't put down for absolutely AGES? I think mine would probably date back to the Mega Drive, where I would play the sonic series for absolutely HOURS on end.
Now think back to the beginning of this post (It was a while ago, thanks for bothering to read this far!) I urge you to buy the console that has the most games that appeal to YOU. Not anyone else. We can all review games, but it's the player that decides in the end...
And that player is YOU
I too started collecting consoles from the ZX81 onwards and remember the Commodore vs BBC discussions. (I had a Spectrum 48k at the time so wasn't too fussed).
I agree it's the games that maketh the console not the other way around. I went from Megadrive to Saturn to PSX to Dreamcast to PS2, because that particular range offered what I considered to be the most exciting games in the way of RPGs, my favorite genre.
At the moment I've just finished watching gameplay videos of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for the PS2, and I just 'know' that this is going to be the game that will take up most of my time during 2002, as well as MGS2 coming out early next year, so for me the PS2 seems to be the correct choice, although it irks me to say that I could probably find just as much gaming goodness in a Gamecube.
XBox gameplay videos are also very impressive, I was going to get one before the PS2 arrived as a gift, and with consoles being nearly as expensive as running a car these days I'm sticking with the PS2.
The good thing is, it doesn't matter what console you end up with, on any one console there will be just a handful of games that will last you the console's lifespan.
*Thinks about digging out the Megadrive for a game of Rings of Power, but still has Silent Hill 2 to play and GTA3 to complete....damn, I'm spoilt for choice again...*
