Having recently had the opportunity to play so-called classic "old" games like OUT-RUN, AFTERBURNER, HANG-ON & SPACE HARRIER courtesy of the amazing Shenmue II - all I can say is this: thank God modern games don't play as badly as these games do. Seriously, they are awful!

Some old games have always stunk, with unimaginative platform games attempting to copy the mario/sonic mould but failing miserably, but hey there were some good old games like bobble and bubble.
