Disney is best known for its animated movies, so its always been puzzling why their Sing It! Series have never gone down to this route, relying instead on High School Musical and pop artists on the Disney label in the US. Disney Sing It! Family Hits is the title to finally give the fans what they really want, music from the films.
Tale As Old As Time
Having songs from the animated movies is going to be a big plus point for anyone who loves the Disney movies (and who doesn't?) especially as it contains songs from both classic films like Cinderella and new features such as Toy Story and Princess and the Frog.
My 4 year old seems to know all the words to the Princess and the Frog and that was the first song she wanted to sing. Within 2 minutes of starting up the game we’d managed to get started and right into the song, the menus are very easy to navigate and you can even change the theme and icons to match your favourite Disney movie too. Ultimately, what you get is something very similar to Singstar, which is no bad thing. Words appear highlighted at the bottom and a level indicator for pitch shows you how well you match the original lyrics. You score is displayed on the right hand side.
I Just Can't Wait to be King
There are 3 difficulty settings. On Easy you can pretty much hum an approximation of the tune and it will give you points, on the harder setting you really need to try hard to get on the scoreboard. There are also prizes (think Achievements or Trophies) for good singing, holding a note and so forth, these encourage you to try hard and if you’re playing on your own they add something to aim for.
However, Sing It! is really meant for group play and is much more fun when 2 or 3 of you are trying to beat each others’ scores. What’s more, you can even try for duet mode where you both sing certain parts of the song.
I Wan'na Be Like You
There are tutorials in the main menu to teach you to sing better. These are presented by the actress who provides the voice for Tiana in Princess and the Frog and explain the basics very well in simple terms. Further tutorials go in to more detail and maybe a bit harder for younger singers but they’re quite useful in learning new ways to improve your singing.
Singing is very much like Singstar, the words and a level indicator for pitch go along the bottom of the screen while a video from that film plays. Words are highlighted as they need to be sung and the pitch/timing is highlighted when singing to show how well you are doing. A score is shown on the right.
The Bare Necessities
Singing requires microphones so it’s worth considering what package suits you best. The game comes as a cheap solo pack for those who already have USB Microphones, a pack with a single Mic and one with 2 for duets. Any USB Microphone will do though, so if you have any Rockband, Guitar Hero or other singing game microphones then you’ll be able to save some money. I tried it with a previous Sing It! Mic and an Xbox 360 Rockband Mic and they both worked fine.
Almost There…
The only thing letting this package down is the lack of songs to choose from. There are 20 in all and all of them have videos, but many games have twice that much and some films are unfortunately missed out altogether, though it's nice to have the newer films like Cars and Monsters Inc included. A Download store would be a nice touch but I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney want to leave more songs for a possible sequel.

Disney Sing It! Family Hits is a well presented package of great songs with an easy to use interface that both kids and adults can use. It’s a great game to play at parties or just with the family.
