Yes, a diehard nintendo fan impressed with a PS2 game. But it is amazing. I played on it for 4 hours! Whay i liked was the size of Liberty Island. Its HUGE, with so much to do and see (and shoot and run over). However my main point is that there is no direst path you must follow to complete it.
I find it very frustrating when a game will always come out the same. I like a game where everything varies and you can do what you want. It is much less restricting.
To name names:
Banjo Kazooie
Mario 64
Perfect Dark
Goldeneye
Twine
the list goes on. All great games, but all direct you down one particular path.
Wouldn't it be more fun if, in goldeneye you never re play a mission. If you screw it up then natalya is dead (yes!) and you have to try other ways of getting to the final boss at the end.
It would mean you could have say 4 game saves and follow a different root with each one.
Some games have a bit of non linear gameplay:
Legend of Zelda
Banjo Tooie
(my i just point out that i have an n64 and all the abouve games)
Now both amazing games. Why? there is no strict order in them. In zelda you can do lots of different things. Its not just going from temple to temple. You can do them in different orders and collect items at different times.
Same in banjo tooie but to a lesser extent. The way each person completes the game will vary dependsing on wether they happen to flip that hidden switch of spot the hidden room.
An example of an amazing game is Eath and Beyond. Now i can't imagine anyone will have heard of it because its stil being made.

basicly (i think) you build a space ship and fly round an online universe doing what you want. Obviously thats a very short way of putting it but it is, i believe the jist of it. I will be getting that game. Completly non linear. You can do whatever you want however you want. No restrictions.
I am hoping for games to become less linear as technology advances and consoles get more memory to store more information to get even more space to look around.
However GTA3 is a step in the right direction as far as non linear games are concerened.
Thankyou for you time (he he)

Thats why i like Deus Ex - it was essentially linear but the path you had to take was so well disguised it never felt that someone had grabbed you by the hand and was pulling you through the game!
That's why I like GTA3. You can do what you want, if you want, if not? Then there's always a couple of missions you can be getting on with.
But as for games where it really is free roaming, well, there'd better be stuff you can actually do, that's for sure!
