But still, it's mostly shooters that use it, isn't it?
If you started a game with a first person view, you'd certainly be expecting to shoot someone, or thing!
Is this a legacy from the old days, in which the only first person games were the shooter-on-rails type of games, like Operation Wolf?
I know that in driving games you can often select a first person view, but there aren't many other genres which have tried it.
The first person adventure seems to be rising in popularity, like shooters, but with less shooting, and more wandering around looking for stuff. Well, a combination of the two really, search and destroy, maybe?
What about beat 'em-ups? Could you have one in the first person view? I suppose it would be quite tough th accurately throw your punches and the like, and you wouldn't be able to really see what you were doing. It certainly wouldn't be much for the spectators. Unless maybe the view was combined. A split screen (not necessarily 50/50) could be used, so you have the typical 3rd person view to watch you kick seven shades of shtuff out of your opponent, but you also have the 1st person to try to target more specific areas to attack, like lining up a punch in the throat, that hurts.
Luigi's Mansion uses a split view. You can call up a screen (on the GameBoy Horror), which gives a first person view of events. You can use it to get a better view of where the ghosts are when you want to take them out.
Surely RPG's could benefit from a first person perspective? You could see the world through the main characters eyes. They could maybe use it to do something about the archaic battle systems. Menu driven battles in the year 2001? I think they could be replaced as the basis for battle. Obviuosly you would need to call the menus if you wished to use an item from your inventory, but that's a different subject.
So, the first person view. Would it work in other genres?
When you complete Resident Evil Code: Veroninca, a first-person view is unlocked. I wish they'd allowed the player to go through the game using this perspective. It would've certainly got rid of those aweful fixed camera angles - improving the game no-end.
That's why many games have a first person for aiming and looking around (like on Zelda for instance).
It also had your opponents eye-veiw, if you'd prefer that. Both are rather difficult to use, though.
Interesting topic though.
You can play Knockout Kings and Victorious Boxers like that, and it's rubbish. You can't see what your opponent is doing fast enough and you get a leathering.
And I can get that for real, I don't have to pay £40 for the privilege.
Talking of beat 'em ups. Didn't that game 'super punch out' on the SNES have a first person view. Ok, it wasn't executed quite as sophisticately as you have described - it was basically hook a left or a right etc - but it was first person. Faster paced action games such as mortal combat might make it too confusing but who knows until it is tried.
I agree on the RPG's though. If you could see directly into the role it gets you more involved. I've seen Deus Ex classed as role play though - maybe it will start to catch on!
Good post!
