Outrun. Remeber the arcade? I came across an old arcade machine of this recently, and I just had to have a go. I remember playing that when the arcade machine was cutting edge and Outrun, that was the best!

The key word in the sentence above is "was". You can hardly call Outrun the best driving game ever when there are such titles as Burnout 2 on the market.

But is it a fair comparison?

You can argue that it's not fair at all, as Outrun is a good 15 years or so before Burnout 2, and technological advances in hardware have allowed game developers to push games to new limits that could never be realised in the era of the 8bit world. In it's time, Outrun was the king, and because Burnout 2 is not as universally accepted as Outrun was for being the king, then Outrun is the better game.

But in my opinion, it's a fair battle. On one side you have Outrun, and on the other you have Burnout 2. Burnout 2 has the better graphics by a mile, better crashes, faster gameplay, more modes, extra challenges, the ability to have more than 3 characters on your name on the scoreboard, and is generally a far superior game.

The age thing is not in this argument, it's a case of which is better. If someone released a game similar to Outrun (not actualy outrun, as it would sell on nostalgia value), with identical graphics and gameplay, would it still be a great game? Possibly. Would you buy it? No. Why would you buy a game that looks and plays like it's 15 years old?

Nostalgia and rose tinted glasses get in the way of our perceptions. As much as I am happy to admit that when I was a lot younger and Outrun was in the arcade, I thought it was the best thing since peanut butter on digestives, but as the technology has improved and the quality of games has increased, I have evolved too and games released today still manage to shock with their competance, even though i may have seen it before.

Games of past generations such as Outrun deserve respect for their place in gaming history, but for me that's where they stay. Titles on the shelves now are far superior, and I get far more excited about what's coming next far more than what has been.

Didn't say it made the game better, I said people look upon old games fondly because it takes them back to a better time. Obviously something like Pole Position pales in comparison with something like GT3. Of course, there are rare games that remain playable for years and years. Not Pong though, God it's crap.

So Lotus Esprit turbo challenge is a better game than Gran Turismo 3 because you were more innocent at the time?

I don't think it's about how good the game is, it's about taking you back to a more innocent time, a time when Stuart Maconie and Kate Thornton were but nippers and Spangles and Space Hoppers were all the rage...

Indeed. should be getting a copy of SWOS 96/97 for the amiga any day now (last sensi game made for the amiga) I'll be playing it all summer against my cousin. We've been playing sensi pretty solid every summer for the last 10 years.

True, but there were many great text adventures that had great a great story andf no graphics at all, which are still worth playing, but in reality you wouldn't go out and spend £40 today on a text adventure for your ps2 now, would you?

Depends on the genre really. Compare Outrun with something like GT and you see how far technology has been able to help the racing game. You can have loads of different cars, sophisticated physics, and racers really benefit from good graphics.

However, something like an RPG or a puzzler isn't as demanding on the hardware and is more about design. Therefore, if a puzzle was great in 1990, it is likely to be still great now. Then you'll maybe have something like Sensi that breaks all the rules. Theoretically sports games should benefit from having more grunt behind them... but Sensi was made that well it still rocks.
