We've seen loads ofadvancements in technology... the programable vacuum, 3D grpahics, water-feulled cars (Cost 12 Mil - Forget it!) but although the games industry has 'evolved' and even matured, there isn't much new, games are still games, they're still not as 'real' as life and you can tell a game is a game.
I've always shunned PC's as anything special... did my coursework on them, used fancy font, printed it, shut down. Simple. Playing 3D games never really crossed my mind... Sure I had Sonic 3D, and even Day of the tentacle, but I never experienced a Tomb Raider, a decent FPS with a good frame-rate... I didn't have a graphics card, but still, the older games would have run... I didn't even bother with Doom!
And now look, i've been thrown in the deep end... At the Custard Factory in Birmingham (Club - They Don't make Custard there!), there was an X-Perience event which I decided to attend... and boy, was it fun.
I didn't like the X-Box to begin with... not because it was big, not because it was Microsoft, but because it was competing against Nintendo... sounds babyish? You think of your favourite 'thing' in the world, then think about the competition succeeding that thing... upsetting, isn't it!! EVERYONE, and I mean everyone, except a select few weirdos (XBox Team, FM, Bill Gates) Laughed at the XBox, you can say "Oh, I didn't" all you want, but no-one believes you... not even the dog! The fact was, and is, that the X-Box is ugly, it has no history to back it up and no AAA franchise(s) to 'get it going' Microsoft brought a mascot, bought developers and bought the hype... if they didn't? X-Box would be in a box... 6' x 2' and about 6' under, yep... dead... pushing up the daisies!
Imagine a PC if you will... just an average one... I dunno, say 750MhZ, now take a brand-spaking-sparkling-shiny GeForce 3 Ti 200 (Or whatever) and stick it in... Not bad, now stick a cool sound thingy in and add a Pentium 3 Processor... Yep... I think Windows XP professional could cope with that. Only, with the X-Box, which has these specs, there is NO Operating System, No Windows, No 3.1, No Linux, No Mac, No Nothing... Except of course the system... 'thing', but in comparison, that doesn't even use a 100th of the resources that Windows does.
Now then, you've got all this kit, and what do you do... why make a games machine of course... capable of games with post MGS2 grpahics, post CD-quality sound (Or equal...maybe) and you make it easy to develop for. Okay, so developing for XBox isn't quite the drop of the hat that it's reported to be for GameCube, but still... the X-Box was made, By, With and For Gamers... they know what they're doing!
But, as history commands, it's the games and developers that 'make' the console what it is... and believe me, Microsoft have LOADS of people on board... they've got everyone, from PC developers, to new developers, to legends to nut-cases! Never in history has there been a console to sport more titles that a PC, over the same period of time, even the PS2 with it's 300+ titles hasn't matched the PC range, but I think Microsoft could... just look, they have top-developers like Konami (MGS2, ISS) to companies only known for their one-off games like Sports Interactive (Championship Manager)
Now, we have these two games, and imagine what fits in the middle - Sega, Namco, thousands of little developers, Capcom, Take-Two, Ubi-Soft, DMA, Eidos, EA, Midway... the list goes on... and you can add most PC developers to that list to, because porting PC games is supposed to be quick and easy!
I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything about the XBox,... in fact, I hardly know a thing... All I do know, is that i've played 3 X-Box games (Gotham, Gun Something (?) and Delta Storm) and they rock... the pad is wierd, the thing is huge, but the games are legends just waiting to be born... I don't want to put you off your PS2 or Gamecube, but you should consider this... it's BIG, not just physically, but in every way...
You know those moments in life where you have no theory, but you strongly believe something so much, a 'hunch' maybe... well, this is no hunch, but I just know the X-Box will do well! I know a lot of this doesn't make much sense, but it doesn't have to... Microsoft will do anything to make the X-Box a success, they have the money, the hype, the developers, the games and a good idea of what's what... you tell me what else they need! A Mushroom Kingdom? Please...
