The majority of games out at the moment have cheats that you either need to find the code for or get rewarded for doing certain things. But are they necessary.
Should cheats be abolished from games or not. I have asked many of my friends, and my findings were pretty much 50/50 for and against. Those for cheats to be kept say that it is an incentive to do more and go further on the game than you normally would have done. Those who are for the abolishment of cheats say that they are pointless and if you had the actual cheats as normal accessible options, then you can be free to do what ever you want instead of being forced to complete and do certain things that you wouldn’t normally want to do.
In the much-loved game WWF Smackdown2 there are many cheats that you can win. But in order to get them you HAVE to do a single career mode for a certain amount of years, but if those cheats were already accessible as normal options, then everyone can choose what they want to do and if they want to do a single career mode then that’s fine and they can, however if they don’t want to then they can do something else.
Onimusha for the PlayStation2 is a great game but can be a choir in that if you want new suits for the characters such as the panda suit, then you HAVE to complete the game. But if the suits were already as options then the player isn’t being forced to complete the game to get the reward. So if they want to complete the game they can if they don’t they don’t have to. It’s all about freedom of choice.
Goldeneye on the Nintendo64 has a Level Editor at the end of the game. But some people who aren’t so talented at the game miss out. The Level Editor should be accessible as a normal option so that everybody gets to have it.
The list goes on, there are so many games out at the moment that has the option of cheats. But what is cheating? Cheating is using the help of something not usually allowed to do something. But its little children who put stupid cheats like invisibility on to complete levels. But I ask you, where is the fun in that? I mean, sure its a laugh at first standing right next to the enemy and blasting a few rounds off into his crotch. But within long you realise that it is just defeating the objective of the game.
For example, Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 is a great game and I’m sure everyone would agree to that. I have completed it all and it was great fun, sure it wasn’t easy, but it was great especially once it’s completed. But my friends little brother only tries to do it with invinsibility or invisibility on. And yes he has completed it but when I asked him if he thought it was good, he replied “I suppose it was all right”. But if you asked anyone who has doe it properly then they would tell you that it was brilliant. So I say that if your going to play a game then do it properly.
To many people the cheats to unlock are brilliant because they act as a really good incentive to complete a game. One of the best games that uses cheats well is WWF Smackdown3 Just Bring It. The reason its cheats are so good is because of two things. The cheats are only got when you complete the game and do certain things. Secondly because the actual cheats are brilliant, they aren’t silly things like invisibility or invincibility. They are good things like new characters or new matches.
So if a game is going to have cheats then they should be sensible ones and not ones that take away the actual objective of the game. Also if there is going to be cheats then they shouldn’t be made as cheats where you just have to find the code and type it in, you should be rewarded for doing things like completing levels.
Nowadays cheats are destroying the game industry because they are stopping people from actually enjoying the games. I think that something needs to be done about it.

That's quite an interesting statement, but it's more to do with the actual game developers than the gaming industry. Like you said initially, most 'extras' (I prefer that word to 'cheats') are only available to a player if they complete certain tasks within a game (e.g. finish a level, complete the game, break a record etc.).
They are put into a game for longevity. If you played TOCA 2 straight through without unlocking anything then it would be a very poor game indeed, but play it as the developers want you to and you have a massive amount of cars and tracks to play around with.
If a game is SO hard that people simply can't complete it, that is a fault of the developers. Any game, no matter what age group it is aimed at, should be able to be completed with practice, nothing else. Skill comes with practice, and if a game is so boring that you feel that the practice simply isn't worth it, that again is the developer's fault.
For those 'gamers' who just can't be bothered and want to type in a code to unlock cheats, that's their problem, they'll probably never learn the skills necessary to complete most games, but that's their problem. Those are the people that the Action Replay cartridges are aimed at.
Personally I'm the persevering type and prefer to learn and develop my skills. There's very few games that I've given up on; (Pokemon Blue was just too annoying for me to complete considering there's a PS2 on the table next to me, Tomb Raider III was annoyingly difficult towards the end, it's on my 'games to complete' list though, I haven't totally given up on it, Unreal Tournament got just too repetitive for my liking, I never actually finished off all the trophies in that one and don't really fancy going back to it to try again). But most games I'll hammer away at until I've unlocked everything there is to unlock.

How do you figure that?
If you want to cheat... cheat....
Otherwise, play the game normally...
There is however, a big difference between a cheat and an easter egg...
Where cheats are things like infinite lives, level skips, infinite ammo, etc...
Easter eggs would be, characters with tiny heads, secrect animation, hidden paint jobs, etc...
Esstentialy a cheat allows you to turn off a challenge i the game, be it not having to worry about running out of ammo, or not worrying about dying, etc...
And an easter egg is a (generally pointless) addition to the game thats stuck in for a bit of fun...
As for GoldenEye allowing the user to access the level edit after completing the game... I think thats a great idea... its not something thats part of the package... and its nice to have your effeort rewarded with something nice like that as well as the perfuntury end game sequence
there was a topic like this a while back.
didn't go down too well.
good try though : )
