Anyone recommend worthwhile books for CGI/Perl/Java?

They don't have to be *really* basic - I've a good knowledge of general programming, but have never looked at these areas before.

Something with good, well-explained examples, small projects, and a list of the available commands etc.

I was thinking of "Sams Teach Yourself CGI in 24 Hours" by Rafe Colburn as a starting point for CGI/Perl.

Bear in mind that I'll be uploading any CGI to Freeola's servers. Do I need anything on my PC to create/test scripts etc.?

Any and all help gratefully received!

I'm learning Perl scripting in Linux at the moment, mainly by asking Luke some stuff and falling back on my PHP knowledge. It's all pretty similar.

CGI 101 is a great CGI/Perl book. It may be a bit basic, but I've been programming for years in various languages and I didn't find it condescending - it's got all the stuff you need to know about it.

I wrote a whole online flat-file database (including password protected entries, and e-mailing forgotten passwords etc) having only read the first 6 chapters which were free on the site http://www.cgi101.com/. The rest of the actual book gives you the advanced stuff you may need, such as regular expressions and relational databases.

IMO, a great book - was very useful to me..

HTML Goodies sell books about web programming stuff.
Scroll down on their homepage and you will find two advertisements for books. Leave your cursor hovering over the thumbnail pictures of the books to see a quick description of them, and click on them for the stuff you need for ordering and junk.

I think the "Sams Teach Yourself" serise are very good. I've used them for PHP, JavaScript and HTML ... I've got a Perl one from them, but don't have any interest in learning Perl right now, so havn't looked at it much (maybe if you want it we could arange a sale :o).).

I am learning java at uni and the first year book we used was Java -first contact by Garside and Mariani. It was quite helpful.

Also it is worth checking out http://www.codeguru.com/java/tij/tij_c.shtml
it is an on-line electronic book and well worth a look if you are stuck in places.
