Mario first appeared in the HUGELY successful arcade game 'Donkey Kong'. He had the cap, the dungarees and the moustache, it was Mario, but not as we know him. He looked quite thin, obviously before he'd started tucking into the Pizza, and his moustache was rather long.
1982, and Donkey Kong Junior (an American inspired title then!) was unleashed on the world's gaming public. This time, you took the role of Donkey Kong Jr. as he rescued his old man from Mario. This time we see Mario's moustache has been trimmed back, and he was putting on a little weight.
1983, and Super Mario Bros. is released, once again, in the arcade. Because Mario is the undisputed star of the show, he's updated his image. He's started to wear thos white gloves now, and his dungaree's have buttons (who knows what they were fastened with before!). His still putting on the pounds though!
'85, and Super Mario Bros. is taken into the home via the NES. His image is now complete, as his hat has the 'M' logo on the front.
And as gaming goes 3D, so does Mario. You can really see the pounds as you run around in Mario 64.
So where next? Or is his transformation complete.
Only time will tell.
