Sony already confirmed they will be making a Playstation 3 and that already before Nintendo and Microsoft even released they’re new machines. So does Sony have a lead or will Nintendo or Microsoft make it big. The answer lies in the future...
What about Nintendo? Does they’re new machine have enough quietly to go victorious out of the duel. By screenshots and how much it sold in Japan, yes. But several Nintendo fans(including me) is concerned by what Shigsy done with Nintendo’s baby Zelda. The best game ever have been turned into a childish game by Nintendo’s leading master, Shiguru Miyamoto. But the rest of the games looks promising, though.
And then we have Microsoft’s X-Box. Microsoft is new in gaming market but does they have courage enough to challenge the two other challengers? They games looks god though. Good graphics, good titles and hopefully good gameplay. What more do you expect.
But what happened to Sega. Well, Nintendo’s old arch enemies have decided to join they’re old rivals by making games for Nintendo. Super Monkey Ball, Sonic the Hedgehog, Crazy Taxi will belong to Nintendo’s Gamecube in the future.
But after this, what can we expect. From Playstation 3 for example, can we expect not-a-fault-graphics and huuuuge games or can we expect something a little more better that the Playstation 2? But is it really possible to improve the graphics that exist now?
And how long will Zelda and Final Fantasy last? Will it continue forever or will people get tired of it and stop buying them. And what about when Shigsy & Co are retiring. Will new genius show up and continue where they left. Maybe we got some of the Future’s leaders among us here?
And what kind a discs will be used 10 years from now. Will some smart guy invent some kind of new discs with extra large space? Or maybe a simulator that will transport you to Hyrule or a battle arena where you will fight your friends? That would be pretty cool, eh?
But anyway, I can’t answer these questions and neither can any of you. Only time can tell us. But I want you to discuss about what the future will bring us. That’s it!
The one thing about consoles games is that they keep track with inflation pretty well, even beating it in some cases. A long, long time ago (7 or 8 years) you could quite easily play £39.99 for a Sega Megadrive game. The latest PS2 games are the same price or even less if you buy from SR.
So in real terms gaming for consoles is getting cheaper.
Browser based games are more and more going down the pay to play route, and the products, though still in the fledgling stages at present, cost a bomb, some charging more than £1 a week to play (Legend of Mir is an example, a massively multi-player online RPG that goes on forever, and so does your subscription).
As competition on the web hots up, with more Diablo IIs, Baldur's Gates and so on coming out, prices should start to make more sense. So again the future is looking bright.
If one of the three big names had to drop out of the console market I'd pick any of them for a number of reasons:
Nintendo are gaming and nothing else. So were Sega and look what happened. The big thing in their favour is that Nintendo have the handheld market sewn up, the only competition is from the mobile phone and PDA market, which isn't really mainstream in the gaming community.
Sony are diversified. If XBox or Gamecube started taking huge chunks of revenue from their turnover they could quite easily pull out of the market and go back to their standard product range of TV's, Hi-Fi's and so on. In their favour is their existing userbase, it's starting to become very loyal in the way that Ninty's are notorious for.
XBox is the unknown. Their first two years will be the crucial ones, and if they come through them without a hitch then XBox will be around in one form or another for a very long time. Probably longer then Sony considering that Microsoft have always been in the right industry (computing) from the start whereas Sony were new to it.
I don't think we'll see any big technological leaps in consoles for at least 10 years now, they might start to clock up 100Hz screen speeds as most top of the range televisions coming onto the market support it, so there's a real chance of some cinematic gameplay in the next decade, rather than just cinematic cut scenes.
They'll find a way of compressing more information into the existing CD/DVD formats for sure, new algorithms for data compression are being developed every week, so we can look forward to larger games in terms of depth of detail and engrossing epic storylines.
Consoles will continue to dominate the mainstream gaming scene, PCs will continue to dominate the community orientated online games, but in both cases we can look forward to some bigger and more beautiful games to play.
20 years from now is anyone's guess, but I reckon by then they'll have an 'Edit my post' button on this site so that I can go back and take out any typos that I made in reply.
