The mobile phone companies have been busy recently. a deal with AOL Time Warner was announced by Sony’s president and chief operating officer Kunitake Ando. Then Nokia’s chairman and chief executive officer announced that they were licensing Nokia’s operating software to rivals. More than a dozen mobile phone companies joined Nokia to create ‘a global and open mobile software and services market’.

At the moment almost any handset can be used to call any other type of handset without a problem, that is if you stick to voice. But when it has to handle data such as multimedia messages ring tones and games there isn’t any were near as much compatibility. The new alliance is an attempt to solve this problem.

But isn’t it a bit late to standardise the system. Couldn’t they have thought of this earlier, like before they shipped almost a billion mobile phones? It is critical for the mobile phone companies to upgrade users phones, because the future profits are almost certainly to come from data services.

Why is it always the way that the consumers have to suffer because companies aren’t thinking ahead? Japan have a standard on their handsets, this is why they can have product that we can’t have over here such as the mobile to Gameboy linkup. This is why places like Japan and America have the upper hand over us in certain sectors of industry.

This isn’t the only sector that is failing in our country. For example, we invented the railways. But how good our are railways compared to other countries such as Japans? We are still in the Stone Age compared to them; they have super fast, efficient and clean trains. Why don’t we? Because companies over here don’t look to the future or want to invest in the future.

Now Virgin have bought brand new fast tilting trains, you might think that this would improve the service, but they can’t run at their top speed of about 140mph for over another decade. Again this is because the companies didn’t want to invest into the future, so the rails need to be upgraded still. Other industries such as education and health care also need improving by upgrading/improving what already exists. They need an injection of money, from companies or the Govement.

I suppose the real question here is why are companies in this country not as willing as in America or Japan to plan/look ahead into the future and invest in it. They usually wait until they have to change how they do things. Surely the future is where all the profits lie. Until companies are more willing to invest into the future this country is never going to lead the way forward for the rest of the world. What do you think? Do you agree?
