I interrupt my scheduled topics for a broadcast I picked up from an unknown source. My colleague has kindly retrieved a transcript of the conversation we received...

Professor: "...no, that's not it. A little more...Perfect! Where are you? Ah, there you are, my young student. As you can see, I finally managed to get the viewscreen operational again."

FIRST EXCERPT
Student: "Wicked, professor! Didn't you say you were going to show me something? Something about a war between several giant corporations during the early twenty-first century?"

Professor: "I did indeed. I think it may be worth our while to observe this one afar, objectively and without interfering for once."

Student: "But you said..."

Professor: "I know what I said, but after that business with the Hand of Omega I've probably done enough behind-the-scenes manipulation for one week. Now then, it's currently the - oh, blast this infernal contraption, can't it even display the date properly? Well, anyway it's sometime in early November, 2001, which means the launch of the two latest weapons in the war should be due at any moment. Now then, take a look at the device on the screen at the moment and tell me what you think."

Student: "Looks like a giant video recorder!"

Professor: "That, Ace, is a Sony Playstation2. It's supposed to be an all-in-one home entertainment device capable of playing the latest games and movies. Due to the untimely demise of this machine - the Sega Dreamcast - it has risen to dominance with over 20 million units sold worldwide to date. This is despite the fact that only a small handful of available games are worth playing on the machine and even fewer are worth buying the machine for. It has taken 18 months since the machine's launch for the quality merchandise to start flowing steadily, with titles such as Silent Hill 2, Spy Hunter and ICO being released on a regular basis."

SECOND EXCERPT
Ace: "Sounds like the public are getting the end of the stick to me, Doctor."

Doctor: "Such language, Ace! Do you eat with that mouth?"

Ace: "Sorry, professor."

Doctor: "Quite right too. Anyway, the two devices depicted here are the latest weapons in this particular war. Now, the one on the right that looks like a handbag is the Nintendo GameCube, while the black device with the flashing light..."

Ace: " Looks like a police box!"

Doctor: "Not a police box, Ace - an Xbox! Now, the GameCube isn't the one we have to worry about. I have it on good authority that this 'Nintendo' company has its sights set on a quite different core audience to that of Sony. This Xbox contraption, however... I've fought the most maniacal, power-mad dictators imaginable. I've battled evil all the way through time and I have yet to see a more dangerous adversary than that of the Microsoft corporation."

Ace: "But if they deliver the best product, what's the problem?"

Doctor: "But they won't, you see! Microsoft's reputation for low-grade drivel precedes them like a long shadow. It looks like the Xbox is already fulfilling that reputation, but with Microsoft's tendency to try and conquer all before them with the iron fist of consumer brainwashing, it would be a dark day indeed if they won this battle for the hearts and minds of Earth's paying public."

Ace: "So, Doctor...what should we do?"

Doctor: "We'd be going up against a foe that make the Daleks look like soft, fluffy kittens. Let's get out of here, as fast as we can!"

After recovering from this interruption we received it is now possible for me to lay out some release dates for these consoles.

GAMECUBE - Available on 5th Nov in the US

XBOX - Available around the same time in the US

PS2 - Available for quite some time in the US

"Police Box" - Probably not available in the US...(in any time)
