Does anyone else get annoyed when they don’t complete games?

I go through patches where I buy loads of games, like recently where I’ve been buying LOADS of cheap N64 games. What this means is that I have too many games and not enough time to complete them all. This has led me to getting to near the end of games such as Zelda Majoras Mask and not finish them!

I just find it REALLY infuriating when I look at all the games I haven’t completed!

For example.

I’m at the last boss in Donkey Kong 64 and haven’t been bothered to beat him and win the game.

I got to the last boss on Perfect Dark on the medium setting, and haven’t been bothered to beat him.

I’ve had Ecco the Dolphin since I got my Dreamcast since something like last Easter but haven’t been bothered to finish it.

I got to the mid point boss on Hybrid Heaven and haven’t been bothered to beat him.

I bought Jet Force Gemini about a month ago and can’t remember how far I’m through that game.

Shenmue 2. Bought that last week, but have hardly played it.

I have a HUGE list of games, which I’ve bought but haven’t completed. The only one I’ve played through to the end recently was Turok 3! I don’t know why, but I felt compelled to finishing that game. I don’t know why, I just did!

What made that game sooo different from the others as to make me want to complete it?

The only reason I can think of why I bothered to sit down and play this game through was that it was different, it was fun, and it was reasonably short. It was different in that I hadn’t played a straightforward first person shooter blaster in ages. It was fun in that, it was relatively simple and so you could just run around like a mad man laying into people. The shortness probably added to the game because there wasn’t any point where you got stuck for ages not knowing what you had to do, or where you had to go. The only point, which held me up, was in beating the final boss at the end. This game is one of few games I’ve played recently which is had that, “Dammit is that the end” feeling to it once I’ve completed it. I wanted it to go on. I do have the option of playing through the game with the other character, who has a slightly different route through the levels, but I don’t have the time to do that at the moment!

Hmmmm, is that my problem? TIME!

Now that I’m at uni and the workload is starting to pile up! I have assignments, which need handing in! Is this the reason for my lack of completion?

I think it is! During my first year at uni, I played LOADS of games! Now I’m in the second year I’ve found that I actually have to do some work! This is quite annoying because I can’t just play games 24/7! I still play loads of games, but I play loads of different games. With the limited time I have and the huge about of games I’ve got, I don’t seem to be able to find the time to complete them all!

Do you ever think that there’s not enough time in your life for you to be able to play all the games you want to?

Most of you are probably still doing your GCSE’s or A/s Levels. I remember back to when I was doing them. I had LOADS of spare time to spend hours playing all the games I wanted. Hmmmm….. well back them I didn’t have as much money and so could only afford a new N64 game every so often, so I didn’t really have as much choice as to what to play. But still, I use to play games to DEATH! I remember me and a mate of mine were racing to see who could play through Goldeneye on N64 the quickest. He completed the game first, but that was due to him getting a guide telling him how to get the Goldengun on the final level, whereas I figured it out myself. But it was such good fun back in those days! Spending hours playing games to your hearts content. I was like the MASTER of Goldeneye! Completed it on all the difficulty levels, and unlocked all the cheats. But now with games like Perfect Dark, I haven’t even completed the game on the medium setting! I’ve got to the final boss on the medium setting, and I’ve done some of the levels on the hardest setting, but I haven’t been bothered to complete it FULLY!

Arrrrr what’s happening to me? Am I loosing something in me as a hardcore gamer?

NO! It can’t be! I’m just gonna blame it on time and having TOO many games! Once I get this ICA I’m currently writing {just having a break to write this} out of the way, and then I catch up a bit on all the other work I’ve fallen behind on, then I’m gonna try n finish all the games I haven’t completed!

I warn people! Don’t buy too many games at once! Try and complete the games you’ve got before getting new ones! I kinda blame my dilemma on the games industry for making soooooo many games that I want to play!!!! There’s not enough time in a mans life to play them all!

I mean. So far this semester I’ve bought:-

On N64:-

Turok 3
Jet Force Gemini
Top Gear Rally
Yoshi’s Story
Multi Racing Championship
Clay Fighter 63.3
South Park

On Dreamcast:-

Vanishing Point
Tokyo Highway Challenge
Shenmue 2

On GBA:- {actually got the GBA this semester to}

Mario Kart Super Circuit
Tetris DX
Pokemon Silver

That’s 13 new games that I’ve bought in the last 2 months!!!

I’ve even been playing other games to. I mean one of my housemates bought Headhunter so I’ve been playing that! A mate of mine has got a Gamecube so I’ve been playing Wave Race, Super Monkey Balls and Luigi’s Mansion on that!

I told ya! There are just too many games out there that I want to play! And I doubt I’m ever going to have enough time in my life to play all the games I want to! Let alone complete all the games I get!

sniff * * sniff * ;(

What can I do to solve this?
Well I’m gonna hopefully go into the games industry as either a Games Programmer or Games Designer {haven’t decided which yet. I’m leaning towards Designer at the moment though}, and so I’m gonna be surrounded by games for the rest of my days! I just hope that when I’m older I’ll still have enough free time to play even as many games as I do nowadays!

Anyway, that’s enough of a rant n rave for now! Better get back to my stupid User Interface ICA!

But what I’d like to know is this. Do other people have this problem? Where they have too many games they want to play and either can’t play them all cos they’ve got too many games or cos they can’t afford them all? And do you find that you never seem to complete the games you have FULLY?

I pretty much concur with YH...

I'll play a game until Ivm bored with it...

Some titles do keep my beadly eyes stuck to the screen until the completion sequence runs past my eyes...

Other games, I'll play half of, then uninstall and stick it in the played collection...

For example 'Crimson Skies' is a game I thought was great fun to play... but by the time I got half way though I had had enough...

I did the same thing with Dungeon Keeper back in 1997... and then earlier this year I decided to give it a bash, and became completly hooked... so much so that after completing I immeadiatly wnet out and bought the sequal...

Other games I have, I played for a few hours after I picked it up, then stuck it in my collection and never bothered with it again...

I suppose what I'm saying is that I see games as less of a challenge which needs to be completed, more of an entertainment medium... Thats one of the reasons I dont mind games being so much shorter these days, I'm after a different thing from the titles than of old???

Ah, no time to play. I'm finding the same problem with my workload.
Fortunately, the latest games i've bought are iss 2000 and fighting force 64 - one you don't ever complete as such, the other i put on easy setting and finished it first time (but it's fun to play with lots of different levels to unlock, so i don't mind : ) ). All this uni work is nuts though... i thought when i tore ligaments in my thumb at least i could fill the basketball training i'd miss with my n64, but since it was on the hand i write with, after the work it's too tired to attach to a control pad. *sob*

Rant aside, good post, a gad contender i believe : )

The only reason I get sooo many games nowadays is because there so cheap. Most of the games I mentioned below cost me £3-£5 A few years back I use to pay full price for games, and then I use to play them to completion. But now, I tend to just buy pre-owned games with cost virtually nothing, and so I buy LOADS of em!

Yes, but not in the way you're thinking. I get annoyed because I have this urge to complete it before I do anything else (bar eating and drinking), so it does get in the way of my social life (or what's left of it), studying and sleeping.

I'd say you've got a problem. You're like a shopper who buys things he doesn't need. Sounds to me like you like the idea of games but not the playing.

I'd say I've finished 95% of the games I've bought. I didn't finish the 5% because they were total balls.

One game at a time. That's how you do it. You won't get annoyed, you'll save money, and you'll get satisfaction from knowing you have completed a good game and got your monies worth.

You're diffrrent from me. You seem annoyed that you haven't completed all these games, whereas I don't care if I complete them or not.

There's only two games I can ever remember completing Goldeneye (me and a mate were having a competition to see who could complete it first as well. We both finished it at almost EXACTLY the same time).

Once it was done on Normal mode, I haven't bothered doing it again. I've already completed it once, why bother doing it again? I just played multiplayer instead. Until Quake 2 came along, which was MUCH better. On the N64, anyway...

The other game I've completed is M:SR on my DC, and that's it. I want to complete GT3, but that's really boring so I may not bother. But I WILL complete GTA3!

And that's it.

I have games such as B&W, Max Payne, UT etc - quality titles, but I just can't be bothered to complete them.

It doesn't bother me. I feel I've got my moneys worth, and there's no risk of me ever feeling ripped off as I read reviews before I buy games, so I always know what I'm getting.

I think one of the reasons why I don't complete games is because I really don't have time. I can get an hour or so of gaming on 3 evenings out of the week, and I can sometimes get a couple of hours in at weekends. And that's it.
