BUT....
Microsoft are doing want Sony did, urrr is it 4 years ago now or more, they are entering a market where only 2 usually dominate. Now the business to do with Microsoft has more money is, for one all the money we hear about Bill Gates is his own money. Microsoft are like Sony allbeit they have different markets (one PC software and the other Hi-Tec Home electronics), but they both have the money backing new investments from their main markets.
So is M$ just like Sony, getting involved in a market taking a BIG risk... answer YES! You gotta think about how much money was put into their machines, that includes advertisin, R&D (yes the original Playstation was linked for Nintendo, but obviously that was scrapped), buiding units etc. The making of these machines costs loads, but estimating their sales would cost even more.
Now you have Nintendo and Sega, the once big boys of the market. They specified their investments in home gaming systems, no other area but gaming (well Nintendo had its toys and packs of 52 cards... LOL bit of history their). But they are just console gaming companies, with little to fall back on, all Sega really has left is its 1st party games, as they say they are not planning another machine. Sega really lost out with the Saturn (eventhough it was a great machine), cos they released at the wrong time.
So Sony and Microsoft can fall back onto their big market shares in other markets, but can Nintendo or Sega do anything but games, IF (BIG IF) Nintendo fails what will they do (just specifiy in Game Boy and sell their first party games to others).
I'm just makin a statement about how Microsoft are doing the same as Sony, but at the time Sony didn't get as much flak as Microsoft have done!
Seriously
:)

Because they had a machine that was far superior to anything else on the market. M$ have bullyboyed their way in with piles of money, with a machine that is a stripped PC made by a company everyone hates because they fancy a bit more money.
