If you like single player games then PS2 or XBox. Out of those two, if all of today's games were avialable for both consoles I'd choose the XBox as it has all the features of the PS2 plus it has a modem built in so you can go online with it as well. But they aren't all available for it, and the PS2 is here and now, so plump for that if you are in the UK and going out tomorrow to buy a console.
If you like massive multiplayer online games then PC would be your best option as there are a huge assortment of both CD based and browser based games to choose from, with the advantage of easy upgradeability and expandability at a later date. More expensive than a console, and having to be upgraded to play the latest games more and more recently over the last few years has driven many PC gamers (like me) back to the console market.
For sheer simplicity of use go for a console every time.

No you dont... :)
My P2-450 plays todays games (e.g. Max Payne, Black & White) with absolutly no slowdown at all...
My brand new top of the range business PC (Acer Veriton FP2) doesn't even come with a graphics card, just 2MB onboard, so if I want to play anything at all on it I have to splash out £170 for a specialised gfx card (as it uses laptop components).
For an extra £29 I can just get a PS2 instead and not have to worry about it.

P3 750!! Thats loads more power than you would ever need for a game for at leat another year yet?
What were you doing to your PC to not get a decent game at 1024x768?

Not really... Ive never had to calibrate my joystick?
:)
