It's the day of the big match,'England vs France'. You have been really psyched up about this match, the Final of the International Cup. You played brilliantly in the Semi-final against Germany, and really showed of your skills and determination when the team won 5-1. But, now is the real moment.

You walk out on to the pitch, and you marvel at the crowd, listening to their chants as you make your way out to the pitch. You line up with your team mates for the anthem, still eager to get the game started.

Soon, your are in the middle with Owen for the kick off. The wistle blows and Owen kicks the ball to you. You pass it back to Gerrard, who then passes it Beckham. England have really started to get the flow going. Beckham is making an early run down the wing. You run into the box, waiting for the cross. Beckham makes a soaring pass into the box. You are up in the aiiirrrr....GOAL!!!

You score an absolutly magnificent early goal, and Scholes runs up to you and gives you a celebration hug. What a wonderful start to the match. Your determination to win this final is certainly showing.

France to kick off. Henry back to Pires, who then passes it to Viera. Viera makes a run with the ball, but in comes As. Cole with a heart stopping tackle, and the ball drops to Barmby. Barmby makes a long pass to Beckham on the wing, who then makes a cross into the box, and you watch it fly over you to Leboeuf, who makes a cracking pass up the field to Petit. This has turned into a counter attack from France. Petit passes it to Zidane who takes it around two of your defenders. You are running back as fast as you can, but it is too late. Zidane has put into the net. You catch your breath, stand up, and head back to the centre spot.

The first half goes quickly, with several shots from either side, and both keepers making some truly wonderful saves. At the end of the first half it is 1-1. You make your way back to the changing rooms.

It is not long before you are back on the pitch for the second half, with it being Frances kick off. You feel a little bit of rain, but that doesn't worry you, you just want to get on with the match. The ref blows his whistle, and France kicks off the second half. You are really motivated now, eager to make sure that you get to hold that International Cup. France are passing it around a lot, until Viera gets the ball and makes a surging run through the middle. He seems to be doing really well. You run back to help. Viera passes it to Henry at the edge of the box. Henry turns and shoots....ooooo off the cross bar, and Seaman gets it. Your heart almost jumps out of chest. That was a close one.

It isn't long until France get another chance, this time Petit is on the wing, and makes a brilliant cross into the box, and.....GOAAALLL! Viera has scored with a magnificant header. You fall to the groung thinking that you could have done more. But, you get back up. This was the time to show everybody what you can really do. At this point, you witness Owen being substituted for Fowler. Your are not so sure if this is wise, but, you don't give it a second thought.

The rain was really coming down now, while you are standing in Frances area, waiting for the corner cross with ten minutes to go. The cross comes in. It flies over your, and as you turn, you see the ball fly into the net. Fowler has scored. It is 2-2 all. You now feel glad that the sub was made.

It isn't long before it is injury time. The moment has come. Beckham is once again running down the wing. He makes a lovely through ball. It's just you and the keeper. The keeper comes diving in. You lob the keeper.....GOAAALLL!
You have scored again. Could this be the decider.

France takes the Kick off, and the ref blows the whistle for full time. 3-2 to England because of your last minute goal.

What a magnificent match.

I absolutely love this game. The physics of the ball, the way the players move, the sense of achievement which comes from knowing you worked for a goal rather than followed a tried and tested pattern every time.

HOWEVER...

...the commentary is absolutely CRIMINAL. I cannot believe that Konami could possibly release this game with such a dismal commentary. I think I'd rather have the silence of International Soccer(remember that on the C64, on a cartridge!?!), than the horrendous, cringe-inducing bilge which accompanies the game. I don't think I've ever experienced such a contrast between the playability of a game and it's sound. What concerns me most though, is I'm not sure whether I can put up with it for much longer and it is really starting to detract from my enjoyment of the game.

For anyone who hasn't played the game and so doesn't understand what I'm going on about here are a couple of the worse clips from the 'commentary'

The audience is starting a mexican wave (when the game is hotting up)
The sun is shining but the wind is howling through the stadium (said during a night game when it was raining)
No goal (said when a shot flew 10 foot wide of the post)

Where on EARTH did they get this guy from (I believe his name is Chris James) - has he ever watched football before? I mean AUDIENCE - for crying out loud, they are fans, a crowd, supporters, hooligans, but never, I repeat, never an audience. This is a joke!

As for Terry Butcher's contribution...well all I can say is that if he was paid by the word then he must owe Konami money. A monk would have had more to say!

Am I the only person who is finding this hugely annoying - football perfection has been snatched away by virtue of the fact that Konami couldn't spend a few dollars more on a proper commentator. I'm sorry but if FIFA obliterates PES in the sales war then Konami have only got themselves and Chris James to blame.

Perhaps we could start a league table of the worse lines from the commentary...

I am not surprised, the commentary is pretty unbearable isn't it.

You would have thought that they would have improved on the commentary by now. But that doesn't matter too much, it's the football that counts.

Hmm, I always seem to have the commentary in German. For some reason, it's more bearable than the English commentary and the player names actually sound more like their real-life counterparts too.

Maybe I should have made the post a little shorter. It's longer than I expected.
