The Move controller had a smattering of games at launch. Most of the retail games were so-so but 2 games available on the Playstation Network stood out. One of these will be very familiar to iPhone users as one of the best loved games on the system.

So can and iPhone game work on an HD console with a motion controller? Well, yes, it seems it can. Flight Control is the game that started off the whole ‘parking game’ phenomena and it still remains the best in the field (or perhaps that should be airfield). The fact that an HD version has made it to PSN is not surprising.

Fasten your seatbelts
Flight Control puts you directly in the shoes of an air traffic controller at a busy airport, but rather than twisting lots of knobs and shouting at pilots it relies on making motions to runways and careful planning.

The idea is to draw flight paths to guide the planes to their runways (larger and smaller planes and helicoptors all have their own specific runways) without them crashing in to each other. The planes turn while when you’ve successfully created a path to the right runway and remains visable on the screen so you can tell where the vehicle is headed. You’ll have to ensure that planes do not come in to contact if they need to cross one-another on their way to their specific runway.

Request a Flyby
If you think guiding aircraft is easy then think again. The planes all travel at different speeds for a start. Drawing one in behind the other may still end up in a mid-air collision. As you guide them, more turn up on the corners of the map and you’ll have to plan ahead and work frantically to get all the planes landed safely.

Mile High Club
The game will finish when two planes collide with a terrible crunching sound (I always wince at it). Far from despairing, it makes you want to immediately get back in and gain a higher score by getting a few more of your aircraft landed. It’s one of those games where high scores are the main goal and comparing them to other players is part of the challenge.

In fact, high scores are compared against other players over the internet. It works well as a good incentive to try harder in order to get a better score and get further up the leaderboard and increases the longevity of the game.

First Class Seat
For the Playstation 3, a brand new airport, Metropolis, has been added. This adds day and night to the mix, with cool lights and an added challenge when the sun goes down. Another addition is the drop-in style multiplayer which lets you add friends to the game with either an extra move controller or the dualshock. This takes some of the pressure away but final scores take account of the multiplayer mode.

Graphically Flight Control on PSN is great while keeping things simple. The 1080p graphics are crisper than they’ve ever been and the different locales have their own unique styles. It’s not littered with detail but that’s a good thing because it would be 10 times harder to see where the planes were going and you need all the help you can get as the airport gets busier!

Final Approach
Flight Control on the iPhone started with 4 maps and just the basics. The PSN game comes with an amazing 9 different maps, 16 different aircraft and a new map that adds night time to the mix. For £3.99 it’s not only a great bargain but also a great addition to the Move line-up.

Score: 9/10
