There is a trend at the moment with PS2 games to include videos and making of’s on the disc. This is what is known as A GOOD THING in the business and gives you a feeling of value for money. SSX Tricky and Silent Hill 2 are just two of the titles containing bonus material.

Perhaps it’s the format, having things on DVD certainly means that there is more space available for this kind of thing and it’s a format that automatically lends itself to extra film footage too. The fact that games seem to be taking a leaf out of the DVD movie market means that we might one day see many more extras with the game. How about music videos from the artists in games such as Tony Hawks and Gran Turismo, directors commentary in Silent Hill 2 and alternative scenes/endings in games, adding more life to the game once you’ve completed it.

One day we may even see a complete merge of formats, with a blockbuster movie sharing the same disc space as it’s namesake game or a bonus film based on the game, made by a film director and commissioned especially for the game release. There are lots of options and avenues open for the expansion of gaming and the bigger the storage space gets (either physically or using compression) the more could be done with the format.

The cynics among us may claim that these extras are currently just a cheap cash in and what we’d really like to see would be the Tomb Raider movie sold with the full version of one of the games (for example), but it must be a step in the right direction if you are getting more for your money and having something that will educate or entertain you when you’ve finished playing the game itself or watching the movie.

For now, we can only hope that this trend continues, with F1 games coming out with a bonus formula 1 DVD and the new Stuntman game coming with a programme about dangerous stunts, it’s finally becoming clear to other games firms that this is the way forward.

hehe I looked at the title, and thought of A Clockwork Orange, what with the 'milk plus' that they like to drink in their cool milk-bars.

Extra's are cool. Extra's are nice.

Milk is cool. When it's been in the fridge.

Good point there pb, it looks like the PS2's DVD Player comes in handy for more than just watching movies.

Hopefulyl we'll see more of these in the near future.

There are already some Playstation games that have Video-Shorts as easter eggs :)

That's what I mean though, other media has sparked off the idea that it might be cool for games to have 'extras' Games players have always liked extra cars, characters and levels hidden away in games, so having extra bits you can get to immediately would be even better (of course, keeping those hidden extras)

Hey, you could even link the game to some hidden extra DVD content too!

From what Ive read, the DVD of the recent Dungeons and Dragons movie includes a demo of Baulders Gate2...

However, multi-format CD's are no new thing... Lots of Games like, WipeOut and NOLF, etc... come with music tracks which you can listen to outside the game...

For a few years now, theres been quite a few music CD's contain Real Player music videos... (Wasnt there a heavy metal CD with a computer game on the album?)

Although, I doub that there will be an incentive to get the Matrix2 on DVD when you buy the game, since their indiviual marketing value is too high... However, I can see a time when games of older movies, (say, Conan?), or if the movie is a sequal, then a DVD of the original film may well be attached?

That was a really good point you made. I agree - the more new things and bonus material that we get our hands on the better. I quite often look at bonus material on DVD's but i have never considered it with games!

I agree, if producers take the idea up it would certainly be a huge step forward. Just wonder what sort of impact it would have on the prices though?
