Possibly the ultimate goal in life, love is something that everybody needs, and wants. Love from family and friends, and/or love from a partner. What I don't understand is, if love is so essential, then why do television programs - particularly series - find it so hard to hold on to?

The reason I have brought this up is last night's episode of Farscape. I don't expect many people here to be regular viewers, so a quick description would be that there is a human, called John, lost in a distant part of the universe. He has begun interacting with many alien races, as well as several aliens who are his ship mates. One of these "alien" ship mates is Aeryn, a female who is very human in appearence. Virtually all viewers of the show have hoped, and expected the John and Aeryn to get together, and near the beginning of the third series... they did.

An interesting twist to their union however is that due to the events of an episode called "Eat me", there are two Johns. One John has got together with Aeryn aboard one ship, whilst the other is left alone on another ship. It is expected that at some point in the story, there will cease to be two Johns, and return to the original story where there was only one.

So... what will happen about the relationship with Aeryn? It seems that all series/soaps etc.. always sturggle to keep a relationship going between characters. Things are never left alone, and two characters can never be allowed to live happily ever after. Two other characters of the Farscape crew had this problem in series two, and it seems that Aeryn and John are now to face this same problem. My prediction was that they would remove the John that had got together with Aeryn, and keep the other John, thus preventing the relationship from continuing, and essentially taking the easy way out.

The latest episode saw the John who has got together with Aeryn become completely taken over by the enemy Scorpius, due to an extremely dangerous mental clone of the villain which was placed in John`s mind. Whilst the episode is "To be Continued", it seems likely that this could be the end of the John in love with Aeryn. The obvious intention will be that there will be difficulties and tensions between the other John, and the now single Aeryn, meaning that the relationship will go back to square one.

I enjoy Farscape a great deal, mostly because they are unafraid to do things that other shows won't. However, if they take the easy way out, and avoid true love, then I will be greatly disappointed. Farscape is not the kind of show that you expect to see "Star Trek style" moves played as a simple way of resolving a potential love situation.

No matter what happens in the end, John and Aeryn will always be in love.
I know this because it isn't a normal soap. There is ALWAYS a happy ending.

You did indeed... and I was worried it could be right, as its the typical, easy way out.

Or at least it seems that way at the moment. Though

True... and I hope so. It`d be a great shame if we were left with one of those "only she and the viewer knows" situations - similar to "The Locket"

Having said that though, at least its not as bad as episodes where nobody knows except viewers - those really irritate me!

Can you imagine Eastenders without any of the gripping relationship based story lines:

Mark Folwer:
"Alright, Guv. Give us a monkey and I'll be up those apple and pears in shot"
Phil Mitchell:
*husky* "Alright, but no longer than five minutes or I'll break yer ham and eggs"
Mark Fowler:
"Steady on luv, all I said woz that I'd paint yer bathroom dang a ling"
Frank Butcher:
"Wiiiiiiiv a little bit of bloomin' luck"

I mean, come on, guh, where's the tension there?
