Having read up on the Xbox, I think Microsoft has a very good chance of doing well. The reason is simply that they have done what Sony did with the original Playstation. They went to developers, publishers and the press and asked them what the console should do. They have built the console around the software- after all, it's the games that count, and MS are making the console so that developers can make games easily. It has many advantages over PS2 in the aspect- development times are quick and it is very easy to program for. Also its hard-drive will NOT be used for patches, rather it will be used to download textures from the games' DVDs so that they can be used far more quickly, providing much better graphics.
But above all it is the games that count. Microsoft has given developers all the codes and tools needed- just as Sony did with the PSX. Of course, I haven't seen the games. But MS have set up a japanese division that has made sure big japanese developers are on the X-box bandwagon. They have also bought bungie- creators of Halo- and this really shows their comitment.
As I've said, it's the games that count, but based on what I've seen Microsoft has got everything right first time... roll on autumn 2001!
