I've become a bit RPG mad recently, simply because, I need RPG's. I've just got PSO, I have the Wind Waker pre-ordered and I need more. My four thoughts are; SoAL, Lost Kingdoms II, Shining Soul and Final Fantasy Tactics. The two GC titles I am getting for sure, I don't care what you say about LKII, I'm getting it. But as for FF Tactics and Shining Soul, I'm not sure. I yurn for both, but I'm thinking PSC may be the best option, even if all three of the titles look extremely outdated and pretty... boring.

I liked it for a bit, then I got bored. Alien, blah, melon-headed hero, blah, Earthbound, blah.
Weeell, I can't say I've heard much about Shining Soul. But I heard FF Tactics was a bit pants. And also, meh at your dislike of Earthbound, for it rules profusely :D
Didn't really like Erthbound, occasionally play Chrono Trigger, and I've completed Mario RPG.

You might want to check out Icewind Dale before Baldur's Gate, it contains slightly less beard.

Therefore, download a SNES emulator. Get Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Mana and possibly Mario RPG... I have played each of these and all are very good RPGs. All very different from each other too, so a nice diverse mix.
Oh. And since that way you'll be getting four RPGs that should last you ages for free, you should be able to pick up Baldurs Gate 1 and 2. Forget the stripped down console Baldurs Gate. That takes away the whole essence of the BG series. The PC versions are the real deal. Beards and all. Get them and prepare to have no life for a few months. I'll probably review them at some point... But quite simply they are god-damn amazing.

They are calling it a sequel, not another part, but it still continues the story.
