Jeepers Creepers was hyped to hell before its release. They made a TV advert in America with Clive Barker saying it was the best horror film in the last 10 years and the early reviews all said it was great, but I have to say that it's not the great film everyone is saying it was. It is a strange film; it has Francis Ford Coppola as an executive producer and a convicted child molester as a director with a very unknown cast (though that never stopped George Romero making good films).

When Darryl (Justin Long) and Trish (Gina Phillips), a brother and sister, are heading home for the spring break during college, Trish persuades Darryl to take the scenic way home through the countryside. It's not long before they are almost run off the road by a battered truck, who eventually flies past them. A few minutes later, they see said truck parked next to an old church. The driver of the truck is dumping something wrapped and tied in a white sheet down a large sewer pipe and then he does it again with another one. The truck driver sees them drive past and heads back on to the road and this time does barge the pair’s car off the road before speeding off again.

After the pair fixes the car, Darryl persuades Trish that they should head back to the pipe to see if they did see what they thought they saw. After an argument, Trish gives in and they head back to the pipe. Darryl tries to see down and ends up falling down the pipe, and thus starts Jeepers Creepers. Jeepers Creepers is a step in the right direction for the slowly dying horror genre. The first 45 minutes are truly stunning, filled with tension and atmosphere and is the most genuinely creepy opening of a film for a long time. In fact, it's only when we find out who the stalker is and why he does what he does in the film that the sinister plot starts to unravel.

Jeepers Creepers is written and directed by Victor Salva, who also wrote and directed the massively underrated horror ‘Clownhouse’ and the not so brilliant Powder. Salva has written Jeepers Creepers so that it starts with the slowly building tension and then when it’s at its peak adds in a few shock scares. But after the first 45 minutes, he seems to run out of ideas and it seems he didn’t know where to take the film. He tries to keep it flowing by introducing a host of new characters (the first 45 minutes we only really have Darryl and Trish along with the truck). These include the horror staples psychic (who kind of semi explains what is going on) and an old lady with lots of cats and a shotgun, who sweats a lot. It’s about this point where you notice the film has lost all tension and credibility, as it's just plain silly. The actual Creepers is also seen far too early in the film; most of the suspense is built up because we, like Darryl and Trish, don’t really know what the hell is going on or who is chasing them.

Gina Phillips and Justin Long both give good performances as the sister and brother with the love/hate relationship, who suddenly find themselves head-deep in this mess and don’t know what to do. The strength of the character building in early scenes is one aspect that allows the movie to work, we find ourselves not wanting these characters to die as we can relate with them - they act like we would act in a situation like this (most of the time, though I doubt any of us would ever get into a situation like this). It's nice to see a female lead that is portrayed stronger then the male character in a horror film, as she makes most of sensible decisions and in fact is the only one doing anything near the beginning when Darryl has seen something so scary he can't even speak.

Now on to the ending, all I’ve got to say about the ending is that it's the worst ending in a film ever. I’ve heard people say the ending is daring in this time of dull horror films, but it isn’t, it just ends. When I say that the film just ends, it's like the director forgot to add the last reel of film. The film does move at an incredible pace, throughout all the film, even the poor last segement of the film moves quite fast and the 90 minutes running time flies by. This may be another reason why the ending seems to just end - the film seems so short.

Can Salva direct or what? This film just looks so good and if Salva had a decent script it would be awesome. The scenery is beautiful and Salva makes good use of darkness and light. One great scene is when Darryl falls down the pipe and is walking around in the dark with the torch. He looks down and notices his lace is undone, so he puts the torch under his arm, pointing backwards and bends down to tie it, only the torch is now lighting up the wall behind him and we're seeing something he isn’t - something not very nice. Salva also likes to use the background of a shot and bring something into focus slowly, like when the pair are driving down the highway and they overtake a camper van, they are busy talking but through the back window, we see the camper van turn off the road and we see another car really far in the distance, it starts to get closer and closer until its right up their rear end. Other strange camera angles used are when We see Darryl slip down the pipe, but when he reaches the bottom, the camera changes to above him and all we see is darkness around a circle of light made from the pipe with Darryl in the circle, he’s falling to earth but it doesn’t look like it, as we are viewing it from above. He eventually hits the ground and bounces slightly before landing again. The creepy score and use of the song Jeepers Creepers also add to the tension in the film.
