Real Golf was supposed to be the big flashy golf game on the iPhone, it was supposed to show Tiger Woods how to really play away from home. Something, though, went wrong.

Gameloft are no stranger to iPhone gaming, giving us incredible games like NOVA and the new Spider-Man game, they’ve also made the best Golf game on the App store at the moment in Let’s Golf 2, but it seems that a different team must have worked on this one.

A good walk…
It doesn’t start out badly. Real Golf looks far better than any other Golf App out there; proper animations, facial features you can actually make out, unlike Tiger’s basic character design and lush scenery all make you think this will be great. Honestly, the game really looks the part.

…spoilt
It’s when you start playing that things go wrong. . It’s not that the game doesn’t look good moving, it does, but the physics are just plain wrong and the animations are annoying. The main issue I had with the game was that during some drives the ball would hit the ground and bounce off at right angles after seemingly making a perfect swing. Once on the green, it’s very hard to judge the power and angle of the shot of your putt due to some poor camera angles and even the overlay map doesn’t help.

Animations between actions (after the ball lands, when you bend to see the green) look lovely but you just can’t skip them. I know golf is supposed to be a patient game but this is ridiculous!

Par for the course
On the plus side, the way you make your shot (finger down for power and back up in a straight line for accuracy) is pretty good, even if it is too similar to Tiger Woods iPhone game for comfort. The cameras on the fairway help to measure out where you want the ball to go and you can adjust the direction with a simple tap on the left or right of the screen. So, no problem with the in-game controls. But then you get to the menu to upgrade your clubs and it feels so cumbersome. A short flick of the finger and you’ll rotate the club selection around faster than a roulette wheel. If it didn’t make so much difference I would have given up on upgrading my equipment altogether.

In the rough
But even if the camera and control system works I found that the physics kept letting me down (and no, it isn’t an excuse for me being bad at the game, either!). It doesn’t happen all the time but when it does it can mean an extra few shots to get to the pin which can mean winning or losing the hole in a competition.

The commentary is another thing which stands out, for all the wrong reasons. Real Golf 2011 gets a commentator that should have been in an American gameshow rather than a golf game. The times I’ve heard ‘Easy, easy’ or told that ‘he’s got a chance for a Birdie’ are ridiculous and Tiger Woods managed to get far less repetition in.

That said, the sheer number of courses, graphics and the multiplayer element impress me. With a good set of online options you can pick up a game over WIFI or Bluetooth easily with a good set of modes to choose from. Single Player gives you a choice of a career, quick play and choice of holes or challenges too, a good range of options to suit everyone.

A long Drive
So, a mixed bag then. But Real Golf 2011 is ultimately a bit of a let down. After getting your hopes up with the beautiful presentation it frustrates in the gameplay area. Some gamers may want to forgive it these issues and will be happy to carry on playing through, but for me it’s more double bogey than a hole in one.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
