With the Gamecube and the Xbox now being available in North America gamers over there may need to choose between the two consoles, some would have already settled for a Playstation2, others may want to add another console to their collection. Some would have already made up their minds. But for those that don't know which they want they may base their decision on the games available.

The Gamecube has 14 games available, and the Xbox 19.

For the sports enthusiasts the Gamecube offers All Star Baseball, Madden NFl 2002, NHL Hitz 2002 and FIFA Road to the World Cup, so fans of all three top American sports are catered for, and there's the ever present FIFA game, though the Americans don't go for 'soccer' in the same way they do their TV friendly sports.

The Xbox has NFl Fever 2002, Madden NFL 2002 and NHL Hitz 2002. So though they have a choice of 2 NFL games, there's no baseball, but i really don't think that will damage the console.

Some may consider snowboarding to be a sport, whether it is or not both systems have a snowboarding game.

Gamecube has SSX Tricky, sequel to the original SSX, which was an overwhelming success on the Playstation2.

The Xbox offers something a little different, Dark Summit. Dark Summit claims to be something on an adventure. Whether the game lives up to it's billing has yet to be seen, and gamers might prefer to go with the game they know, SSX Tricky.

Racing games are very popular, and the Xbox has more of this type of game than any other, boasting MSR sequel Project Gotham Racing, 2 NASCAR games, Test Drive Off Road, 4x4 Evo, and the terribly named Mad Dash Racing.

On the other side Gamecube only has Crazy Taxi for road-based speeding fun, and the water based alternative Wave Race: Blue Storm.

Then there are the extreme sports.

Gamecube has 2 of the most popular franchises available, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, and Tony Hawks 3.

The Xbox has Transworld Surf, and Tony Hawk's 2+. Many won't be that impressed by the older version of Tony Hawk's, given that both the PS2 and the Gamecube have the latest version.

When it comes to shoot 'em-up's (does anybody else call them that anymore?) you have Airforce Delta Storm on the Xbox, and Star Wars: Rogue Leader on the Gamecube. Surely anyone in their right mind would prefer the Star Wars game, right?

Othe X-box games can't really be compared against anything similar on the Gamecube, as there is no real alternative.

Shrek is the token game for kids. And only kids. Only Nintendo really know how to make games that appeal to all ages, and this title just has no depth whatsoever, apparently.

Cel Damage is a cartoon style game (cel-shaded geddit?) in which you bash stuff.

Fuzion Frenzy is a party game, so there's something fun for the multiplayer gamers out there.

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I don't get this game, you walk around, and pull levers and stuff.

Dead or Alive 3. A great fun beat em-up. One of the X-box's top games.

Halo. Apparently the best game on the system, FPS - drive trucks, kill stuff.

The other Gamecube games are:
Tarzan Untamed - a sucky game based on the sucky movie.

Batman: Vengeance - A 3D action adventure. Great fun if you like Batman, a bit linear.

Luigi's Mansion: Apparently great fun, but the game isn't that big, which lets it down a little.

Super Monkey Ball - a puzzle game, and a party game. The puzle game involves rolling around picking up bananas, there are loads f options for multiplayer games.

So which has the best games then?

It looks like (from reviews you can seek out yourselves) that the top titles on the Xbox are superior to those on the Gamecube. Halo is recieving a great deal of praise, and DoA3 is apparently excellent. However, there's a lack of variety in the other games available, and many of them fall very short of the benchmarks set by the Xbox's premium titles.

The Gamecube has a larger number of 'must-have' games, but still also plenty of games that just don't seem to be 'next-gen'. Tony Hawk's 3, Rogue Leader and Super Monkey Ball have all recieved great reviews, and some of the other games are almost as good, like Dave Mirra, and Luigis Mansion is said to ba absolutely stunning, but just too short.

From my biased view I'd say that the Gamecube was the better buy, but a fan of beat 'em-ups and racing games would find the Cube currently lacking these titles, and may be disappointed.

Also, many of the games will eventually appear on both systems anyway, so if you're willing to wait the picture will change again, very dramatically.

I think the 'hardcore' gamers will have made up their minds by this point (in the USA anyway), but the casual gamers may still be swayed. And they are gonna be attracted by good graphics, 'cool' looking games (eg. flashy racers, maybe extreme sports games, and sports), and advertising. The Xbox would win on advertising, and on 'cool' looking games I think Xbox might pull it with the racers, but Ninty might attract gamers with the stunning looks and fast paced look of Rogue Squadron 2. We can't tell at this point, but I still want a GameCube.

It's too difficult to decide, I think the X-Box's biggest failing point could be that it's trying to thieve good PC games. So in the end PC gamers hate the fact it's stealing the games they want to see in the future (Halo, which could apparently have been released earlier if it was made for PC first) and they could also just wait to get the best games which will probably be released for the PC eventually anyway. Still, the X-Box does have the usual set of console advantages, such as multiplayer on the one console and snappy loading times (though this is getting to be less and less of an issue when compared to PC games and Operating Systems). Anyway I think that the Gamecubes advantages of original style and uniqueness in games may just make it a better choice, but it remains to be seen.
