Google rolled out Instant Search in the UK yesterday.

Instant Search is one more step on from Google Suggest. Where rather than just the search terms being predicted Google now display the search results and adverts for the predicted terms.

I had previously seen this when Google were calling it 'Streaming Search' a week or so back. They must have been trialling it as I had a call from one of my clients asking how to turn it off!

I wasn't seeing 'Streaming' so I got them to email me a screen shot. So Streaming has now officially become Instant.

So far I'm not too keen.

I'm not sure how Google do their usability testing but they could do better! When using the home page option to turn Instant Search off my normal search preferences get trashed :¬(

I like my searches opening in a new window(tab) and 100 results per page. Clicking the Google home page link to turn off Instant Search also overrides these settings! Surely Google would have found this?

I was happy using Google Suggest (where suggested searches pop up when you start keying) but I see in the Search Settings this is no longer an option. So now you seem to have the choice between 'Suggest' and 'Instant' and those users that may have had Suggest turned off will be out of luck.

I love Google but they do work in strange ways sometimes...
I replied to Google (don't worry I know they won't see me!) via Twitter yesterday when it launched but had trouble fitting the above comments in the 140 chars you get, so thought I would ramble on here and Tweet referring to this Google Instant thread just for the hell of it :¬)
