While Sega now make the Sonic games for Nintendo consoles, it's still unlikely that we will see any large cameo appearance from Sonic in a Mario game, let alone a game featuring both of the icons of gaming. The only cross overs from Nintendo that I can think of are the Smash Bros games and perhaps Diddy Kong racing, which was all Rare characters (even rarer now! hohoho)
Not only Nintendo either, Sony could give us a game featuring some of its main stars too. How about Jak and Daxter meet Solid Snake? hm, or maybe Crash Bandicoot teaming up with Lara Croft for a spot of adventuring and spinning on boxes? Ok, so bad idea perhaps, but there ARE plenty of good team ups that could be done, even cross platform.
People go by the iconic characters in games these days, so it seems surprising that they don't pop up in more than their own titles (other than posters on the walls of the gaming universe). It's not as if the progamming teams are coming up with fresh ideas all the time either, look at Metal Gear Substance, that at least was crying out for cameos from other game stars. Just like Smash Bros Melee, we could finally answer the big gaming questions, like who would win in a contest of wits out of Snake and Lara, or whether Sonic really would leave Mario in a spin.
Still, we do have the occasional hidden cross character events. From the early days of Final Fight characters in other games to the soon to be released Soul Caliber 2 with different guest stars on the three different versions. They are all hidden away or not mentioned though, it would be nice to see some real interaction between them.
Who knows... we'll see.
Although Diddy Kong is a RARE character that only appeared in Donkey Kong and is now crossing to Mario Kart as a Nintendo character...
Depends how you look at it really.
Namco have done it with all the developers (except Microsoft) so there's no real reason why Nintendo shouldn't.
And Sonic Team are only making games for the GC, so Sonic/Tails/Knuckles should get in too. Maybe even Joe from Viewtiful Joe could be in it, seeing as that's a scrolling beat 'em up anyway.
I can see what you're saying, but it would take two or more developers to come together to create these games featuring multiple characters. The only other way would be one developer trusting another with it's characters and having little/no input to the game (unlikely unless the other company gets something such as money or if the company is a first party developer and is getting an exclusive for their machine). Unless it's only one developer cross-pollinating as it were their different franchises... but lets face it, few developers nowadays have large numbers of recognisable characters... Nintendo are probably the only company with enough recognisable faces to make it worthwhile merging their characters into one games, a fact they exploited with Smash Bros.
It's a nice idea, but I don't see it happening until there is greater co-operation between developers...
