As technology moves on, the world of gamers have higher expectations when it comes to the quality of the game they are buying. In this modern world of ours (!) we expect programmers to make games that satisfy the gamer in every aspect. We want graphics, we get graphics- but we dont get gameplay. "Why is this, " we ask. Because the majority of the time, programmers are showing off their skills in Motion-captured physics, not original and unique gameplay flair. There is probally only one Company I have seen do this and it is Rare. I have found 2-D fighters have excellent gameplay, very rarely do you get a very graphical fighting game that is worthy of playing. Again, the only company I have seen do this is Namco (Teken series, soul calibur)
Now we are expected to have the wool pulled over our eyes when we buy a game just because it looks lush. Pretty soon, it all becomes clear that a game like this is very weak under the surface. Square, on the other hand have done it with the Final Fantasy series. Im amazed playing a game like WWF Smackdown, then going on to play FF8, thinking, there is something wrong here. Future of gaming is not all about the console, but the people that make the games for the consoles. So what do we do to make the Future of gaming have a stable future. We try to convince Game companies to have a long hard look in the mirror, instead of letting a handfull of excellent gaming companies dominate the industry, which they are and deserve to!

Perfect Dark works fine for me and suffers no slow down. Multiplayer is brilliant and works at normal speed even with 4 of us and 4 simulants

Your post doesn't quite make sense, but here goes :)

Rare aren't perfect: Perfect Dark was a HUGE dissapointment, make no mistake. It's OTT graphics and effects were too much for the N64, hence the awful slow-down, and near unplayable multiplayer. Good game, worse than Goldeneye, and pretty poor when compared to the huge leaps PC games have made in the genre.

But I digress...

Gameplay always, ALWAYS wins over graphics. However, some games just wouldn't work in 2D, or minimal polygons. MGS, Half-Life, FF7, etc are supurb, but partly because they are amazing to watch AND to play. And that's the way it should be. Thankfully, the developers with the means to produce these graphical feats tend also to be the ones who make the best games - which can only be a good thing.

However, I believe graphics have reached a point when nothing that can be acheived will ever make for better gameplay. Take the PS2 launch titles - nice to look at, but nothing we havent seen before.

One last thing, I really hope you're not saying FF8 is a case of graphics over content? Or am I mis-understanding?
